Army to Muster Out Most Veterans After War Ends

Washington August 13 Special A despatch reports that navy commands at Manzanillo Cuba have halted hostilities and the president will reduce the army to 100000, mustering out volunteers beyond that number. The government will care for Spanish prisoners of war in Cuba and Puerto Rico and Spain will reimburse for their sustenance. The president said executive officers will follow this plan.

Despatch from Porto Rico dated August 12 reports Mayaguez evacuated by Spaniards with General Schwan taking possession without resistance. Brooke remains at Guayama and Wilson at Coamo. Fierce fighting continues between Wilson’s forces and Spanish pickets with occasional volleys. Batteries moved to support infantry as the action persists.

Peace Commissioners Named Likely Trio Plus Two Candidates

Washington August 13 Special says Secretary Day Senator Allison and Senator Gorman will be three peace commissioners. Joseph Choate or Elihu Root of New York expected as another. Senator Davis of Minnesota offered a place but likely to decline. fifth member to be chosen from non-senator candidates.

War Cost to Government So Far

Washington reports that the Civil War's duration of 114 days has cost the government about 150 million dollars to date. Of this sum 98 million has been paid. the War Department shows 65.3 million and the Navy 92.7 million. Congress appropriations total about 360 million through January 1 next.

Manzanillo engagement signals peace status efforts

Washington Aug 18 reports word reached Manzanillo that a cessation of hostilities had been ordered. Special dispatches said Blanco had succeeded in delivering the news to the Mexican port, prompting immediate efforts by the United States and Spain to confirm the peaceful status of affairs with both sides.

Cloud Burst in Hawkins County Kills Seventeen

A Beech Creek cloud burst in Hawkins County claims seventeen lives with thirteen bodies recovered. Victims were from poor families whose cabins were swept away in the flood. Also reports Mulai Ali El Aziz, sultan of Morocco, is dead and a Democratic state convention is set for Sept. 28 in Syracuse. The Third U S Volunteers sail for Santiago and officials congratulate McKinley on the war outcome.
