Uniform Valuation Plan for Imports Proposed by Senate Panel
Washington April 14 a Senate sub committee on undervaluation of imports that has spent almost two years investigating the issue plans a remedy. Senator Beck says the problem spans inter state commerce and complicates the entire customs and consular services with inconsistent port valuations and merchant appraisers. The proposal aims to abolish merchant appraisers and appoint nine government appraisers five in New York City and four at other ports, with a three person New York board of appeals to ensure uniform valuations. The panel will submit the plan to the secretary of the treasury and port collectors before introducing a bill when Congress convenes.
