Descriptions of a vast prairie blaze across Phillips Graham and Norton counties, with sixty miles of burning trails, massive losses of grain, barns, and livestock and scattered deaths. Separate report from St Augustine Florida details a hotel fire, destruction of historic buildings, and a total loss possibly reaching several hundred thousand dollars.
Fire at J J McGeath wall paper house in Chicago on April 13 destroyed stock and building. Firemen fought the blaze from 1 to 4 am, water poured on flames but the stock valued at about 300,000 was lost, heavily insured. The wall paper concern was discovered to be on fire between wood and time of discovery, with full headway before attendance.
Jacob Schaefer of St Louis defeats George Stosson of Chicago 800 to 780 in a midtown Central Music Hall billiards match before about 600 spectators. Schaefer surged from a 200 point deficit after 25 innings, then dominated with brilliant play, final score 800 to 780. Other sports results: Chicago tops St Louis 15 to 10 in baseball at Louisville, plus regional scores from Cincinnati to Nashville.
