A cable from Otis reports Santa Cruz captured and Lawton pursuing rebels. Mantua says Lawton captured Santa Cruz and drove rebels led by Pac Wah into the mountains. Americans report 6 wounded while rebels suffer 68 killed and 40 wounded. A scouting party was fired upon near the railroad wounding two. The President selected Bartlett.

Tripp Nominated to Samoa Joint Commission Seat

South Dakota Rep Tripp named on the Samoan joint commission. Final ratification of the peace treaty set for tomorrow afternoon at the White House. Supreme Court adjourned in memory of Justice Field. Exchange copy of the Spanish American peace treaty reached Washington and was placed with the French Ambassador for final ratifications.

Riot in Pana leaves multiple dead and wounded

Special report from Pana Illinois recalls a riot on Locust street with deputies white miners and black miners. Initial death toll includes one white miner and several injured with later figures listing seven killed. Gov Tanner orders three companies of the Fiftieth infantry to Pana by special train.

Roosevelt and Harper Address Chicago University Visit

Governor Roosevelt of New York left his hotel with President Harper for Chicago University to address students. Crowds had waited for hours, cheered as the Rough Riders colonel appeared. Postmaster General Charles Emory Smith joined the party and the governor was received with enthusiasm at the university.

In Cnarceston district, thirteen Lake City citizens faced trial for the alleged lynching of the colored postmaster. The case opens with 150 witnesses slated for examination. Defendants Jos. P. Newman and Early P. Lee became state’s witnesses after indictments were returned.

In Pecatonica a general caucus was organized amid calls for changing how village officers are elected. A petition favored by many was circulated to discuss licensing, leading to two caucuses one pro and one no license. Some nominees withdrew and no clear slate remains.

Freeport Presbytery to Convene in Il on April 11

The spring meeting of the Freeport Presbytery will gather at First Presbyterian church in Freeport on Tuesday April 11 1899 drawing about 150 delegates including around 100 ladies from local church societies. The event runs Tuesday and Wednesday with departure by evening westbound trains.

Broombeton, Ill April 9 Farmers in McLean county are greatly discouraged by an unusually late spring. Frost has largely left the ground but spring plowing is far behind, soil remains cold and wet, and planting is at a standstill as oats sowing begins only for the year.
