Otis reports Lawn ton's success at Santa Cruz as of 4 P M more complete than yesterday. The enemy left 93 uniformed dead on the field and many seriously wounded. The city fell without destruction of property. Lawton in pursuit. insurgents attacked McArthur's railway line last night with a small force and were repulsed. Lieut Elling wounded slightly. one death among two wounded.
Washington April 11 Special. Complete restoration of peace between the United States and Spain was effected today through exchange of ratifications of the peace treaty. A proclamation by the president followed announcing to the world that peace is restored. The ceremony was simple yet imposing and marks the closing scene of the negotiations reuniting the estranged nations. The president issued proclamations at once confirming peace exists between Spain and the United States.
The trial of Senator Quay and his son Richard for conspiracy in misusing funds of the People’s Bank of this city opened this morning. Witness after witness was called to testify as the proceedings advanced rapidly across the day.
Heavy loss reported with three killed and twenty wounded. War department informed of arrival of part of the 49th Iowa at Pulaski. Fourth Illinois moved to Savannah. Manila dispatch notes rebels cut telegraph lines near Malolos, outposts of Minnesota and Oregon regiments attacked with American casualties. Rail lines damaged but restored. In Pana Illinois on April 11 special reports say quietness reigned as militia held control and deputies were disarmed. The coroner hinted at bodies on town outskirts while deputies disarmed and searches for dead to be held today. Governor rebuked Sheriff Downing for leaving during the riot, and a later mayor statement blamed deputies and striking miners for yesterday’s shooting.
Canton Ohio April 11 witnesses testified about the whereabouts of Mrs. George before and after the Saxton shooting. The testimony generally places her in the neighborhood at the time of the crime, suggesting she was near Saxton when the shooting occurred.
In New York on April 11 a crane derrick overturned on a bridge under construction over the Harlem river at 132d street. Thirteen workmen were involved. three were killed, ten drowned, and nine injured. The accident occurred when the derrick toppled into the water.
Des Moines reports the Iowa state weather bureau issued its first crop report of the year noting the season is two weeks later than average. The report says late winter wheat is killed while early sown wheat has suffered materially.
