Disaster at Sea Stella Wreck Near Guernsey Apr 1

The steamer Stella, carrying Easter travelers to Guernsey, struck rocks near Alderney in fog and sank shortly after. About 140 passengers and 42 crew were aboard. death toll estimated around 70. Captain perished aiding others as boats filled with survivors endured fifteen hours at sea. Rescue ships found dozens clinging to wreckage. over 100 survivors reported.
