Tuition is free for those meeting state law, with boarding at 3.50 weekly including room, heat and laundry. New gym, electric light plant, recitation hall, dormitory upgrades planned for student comfort.
The August effort to end the anthracite coal strike is revived as leaders pursue a broad public rights settlement. A mysterious, highly regarded figure directs the movement, meeting in Philadelphia with Mitchell and district presidents. Officials deny details, while miners rally to resist any wage-scale compromise and prepare for an extended stand.
Andrew McNulty died Monday at Hanover hospital Scranton after weeks of treatment. Aged 34 he was son of the late Thomas McNulty long resident in the area and once a Foster township school teacher praised for his intellect and promise. He leaves his mother two brothers and four sisters. Remains were taken from Scranton to Mrs. Patrick Ward Silver Brook. funeral is 9 am tomorrow with a requiem mass at McAdoo and burial in Hazleton.
Rev. Carl Houser pastor of St. Peter and Paul's Slavonian Lutheran church filed a criminal libel suit against L. G. Lubrecht editor of the Hazleton Standard. The suit concerns alleged injury to reputation and a Monday Standard article claiming missionary activity among Houser’s congregation. Bail set at $500. hearing waived.
The Free Hospital for Poor Consumptives and the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Tuberculosis push a state wide campaign. They plan a Philadelphia clinic and a future hospital for late stage cases, with emphasis on case registration to aid patients and prevent spread. Dr. Lawrence Flick notes about 10,000 current cases in Pennsylvania and a lengthy White Haven waiting list. The effort seeks compulsory disease registration and hospital funding, noting New York and Boston as models.
Superintendent L C Smith of Drifton bans weighing any wagon driven by Burgess John F Boyle of Freeland at Drifton scales. Boyle, a Freeland Brewing Company driver and union worker, is linked to Harleigh culm bank fuel used at the brewery. Smith also ordered Boyle’s wagons barred from Coxe Bros scales. A Drifton weighing refusal followed. A Democratic county candidates meeting at the county seat outlined plans for a large election victory. Preparations are complete for a mass meeting of the striking mine workers in Freeland and vicinity this evening. The gathering at Ridge and Luzerne streets, opposite the Grand opera house, will feature several speakers including W. R. Dettrey of Nuremberg, a member of the District 7 executive board. The meeting opens at 7 o'clock and all local strikers are invited.

Louis Schmidt wed Mrs Della Buchman yesterday afternoon at 4 30 in St Luke's Lutheran Church Rev J J Kuntz officiated. Groom attended by John Birkbeck bride by her sister Maggie Buchman. After the ceremony guests gathered at the Schmidt home for a wedding supper before the couple departed for Hazleton where Schmidt works as a cutter in the regalia factory.
J E Curry promoted from assistant trailmaster on the Jersey Central between Bethleben and Hampton Junction to general agent at Bethleben and Bethlehem Junction. He succeeds Wo Wiebold, whose resignation took effect October 1. Curry is brother of a South Centro street merchant and was previously involved as mail and telegraph operator.
