Mitchell Replies to Baer in 3000 Word Union Statement
John Mitchell president of the United Mine Workers presents a detailed response to George Baer’s arguments in a 3,000 word prepared statement. Mitchell asserts union aims over management, outlines wage and hour demands, and favors an agreement on pay and conditions for a set period without seeking formal recognition. He cites district input, defends independence from management, and includes a warning against violence. Reports note rumors of concessions by independent operators and train suspensions denied by Reading Company officials. An extract from Mitchell’s speech is included, urging lawful conduct during the strike. A fatal shooting occurred at Nanticoke, with deputies firing on strikers near Avondale, plus multiple clashes and ongoing tension as unrest continues. An intake lists limited certified miners in the region and troops ordered to Lackawanna County.
