Attorney Wayne MacVeagh recounts failed talks with Mitchell to end the anthracite miners dispute. He states the tentative, nonbinding plan included eight hour days, a 10 percent wage rise, check weighing, and arbitration up to Judge George Gray. Operators privately doubted success and Baer urged adjournment to December 3.
George W. Larsen stars as Rip Van Winkle in Freeland on Tuesday at the Grand opera house. A nationally known actor, Larsen portrays Rip from youth to old age with a top team, lavish scenery and electrical effects promised by manager Benedict for an ideal up-to-date production.
At Drifton the Coxe Bros & Co collieries opened with nearly all workers returning. Some employees were sent home due to unreadiness of positions and a few in one department felt slighted by officials. Owing to mine conditions many quit at noon, while other company collieries plan to resume Monday.

Lehigh University at South Bethlehem Pennsylvania places at the disposal of the Mining and Mechanical Institute principal an honorary four year scholarship entitling free tuition for a college course starting September 1903. William Leaseilas, once a factory manager and now living in Pottsville, narrowly escaped death while hunting in Panther Creek valley on Tuesday. In light drizzle his coat snagged the trigger as he wiped moisture from the gun barrel, the left barrel discharging and striking his right foot. The charge tore through the side of the foot, injuring the toes and instep but not expected to cause serious complications.
Frank Mertuyak of Hazleton files for writ of mandamus to force St. Peter and St. Paul Society to reinstate him as a member. He says dues were paid to June 1 and offered again September 16 but officers refused. he was expelled for working as a non union man during a strike.
The widow of John Brogan of Dlifton died this week at their Denver home. Married last June in Philadelphia, she leaves two brothers, with remains expected to arrive home soon and funeral time unsettled. Postmaster Williams reported 500 Washington bachelors seeking wives, sending names to James Evans. Mrs. Keck of Wellsport won 12,500 from Reading Railway in Philadelphia for her husband’s death at Tamanend, caused by a Reading car collapse on Central tracks.

The Crescent Bloomsburg football game was not played yesterday as Freeland failed to reach on time because of a trolley car mishap between Berwick and Bloomsburg. The Crescents, with a strong squad, were confident of victory. The Crescent second team beat White Haven 10 to 0, Hazleton defeated Carbondale Indians 26 to 0, and the Jumbo team fell to the Merriwells 5 to 0.
Rev. C. G. Langford will speak at Sunday afternoon devotional at 3 20. Both ladies and gentlemen are invited. Mule Glee Club members are asked to meet at the Y M C A rooms to renew rehearsals.
