District leaders Nichols Daily Fahy face cross examination while rescue efforts continue after a deadly mine explosion at Luke Fiddler colliery leaving four dead and many injured.
Manager Alden Benedict brings an up to date Rip Van Winkle to Grand Opera House tomorrow night. The production features advanced scenery and electrical effects, a strong acting company, and twenty five local children joining Rip for the first act in the children’s song Johnny Smok er.
Four miners died and eight were injured in a gas explosion at the Lake Viddler colliery near Sbhamo kin on Saturday evening. The blast occurred in the second level where fifty workers were employed. Officials speculate the ignition came from a lamp or a broken wire around the flame as the shaft proved highly gaseous.
E F Hanlon principal of the borough schools will open an evening school for employed girls in the Rerowich building. Courses in literature music sewing and cooking will start with free tuition and a capable college lady in charge. Opening date and further details to be announced.
The Shickshinny borough council raises prices on incandescent commercial lights by 50 percent due to fuel costs. First four lights cost 50 cents monthly, each additional light 30 cents, and lights burning past 1 AM incur 50 cents extra. One all night light allowed per ten lights. Dwelling light rates stay unchanged.
The funeral of the late Mrs. Jane Brogan wife of John Brogan who died at Victor Colorado on the 26th alt will be held tomorrow from the home of her brother Michael McHugh in Hazleton The body will leave at 9 am by trolley for Drifton a requiem mass will be read at St Ann's church at 10 am and interment will follow at St Ann's cemetery
