Thanksgiving Day promotion offers warm outerwear for the cold season. Highlights include overcoats for men youths and boys in various styles and cuts. Also featured are clothing neckwear hats and footwear for all, with lines of dress goods and dry goods for ladies.
Coxe Bros and Co strikers reject the latest offer to reinstate displaced workers and split the work among those in line, while preserving positions for some nonunionists. The strike continues as the union declares the plan unfair and calls for a fair settlement.
Vincent Passarella died after sudden illness at the Wagner House in Hazleton. Cause listed as fatty degeneration of the heart. Aged 46, survived by wife and nine children. Immigrated from Italy 35 years ago, lived in Lattimer then Freeland where he married, moved to Hazleton ten years ago becoming a prominent businessman. Funeral set for 10 am Wednesday with interment at St. Ann's cemetery.
John Kawalski aged 19 of Freeland was tried for felonious wounding of Susie Caron. Prosecutors said a stone struck Caron’s head leaving her in serious condition days. Kawalski denied throwing the stone but admitted being in the crowd. Jury found aggravated assault and battery. Sentence: fine, costs, and eighteen months in county jail.
Candy McCole and Mrs. Thomas J. Moore reached an amicable settlement in the equity suit over the Moore property. McCole will assume about $600 in debt and pay Mrs. Moore $1,675 to regain ownership, with Attorneys Carr and Stroh handling the negotiations.
James Campbell about 55 was brought from his Eckley home to the borough lockup Saturday night. He was moved yesterday to Laurytown asylum by Constables J F Welsh and Patrick Heeney. Campbell resided near Bekley No 5 breaker, between Eckley and Highland, and had shown signs of insanity. Careful treatment is expected to restore his mental faculties.
The Anthracite Coal Strike Commission adjourned until December 3 as attorneys foresee a single trip left to Scranton for final agreement. MacVeagh and other leaders indicate executives approve settlement outlines, aiming for a 10 percent wage rise nine hour day and trade pacts, with coal weighing rules unchanged. A conciliation committee will guide negotiations under commission oversight, while pressure from outside parties remains unconfirmed.
