Cold Weather warning urges preparation for five months of winter. Advertises clothing, overcoats, furnishings and shoes for men and dress goods, dry goods and notions for women. Promises impervious protection at cheap, satisfactory prices and invites shoppers to compare goods and prices before buying.
James Gallagher, a Jeddo miner about 60, told the Anthracite Coal Strike Commission at Scranton that he never received wages for 17 years and nine months because the company store took all earnings. He described debt bondage, eviction, and high store prices as tools of control by G B Markle & Co. The hearing also featured Andrew Chippine, a boy said to be 13, who recounted earning four cents an hour in the Markle mines to support his widowed mother after his father was killed in a Markle mine. The commission heard of four-room housing, boarders, and mounting debt used to keep workers in debt.

The funeral of Mrs. Mary Coll wife of Henry Coll evicted with her family from Jeddo last month due to the effects of which she died Friday was held this afternoon. Interment at St Ann's cemetery. Oscar Mismer aged 43 died at his Hazleton home Saturday survived by his mother of South Bethlehem his wife three daughters and one son. Funeral Tuesday at 2 pm services at the residence by Rev A W Brownmiller then interment at Freeland cemetery. Mrs A W Lessenring of Mauch Chunk died Saturday aged 77. Merkt's holiday novelties and candies.
Foster township school board met in regular session to review attendance figures, close schools for December 24 to January 5 1903, and issue full pay to teachers. They debated purchasing historical maps for grammar schools, approved several bills, and discussed collecting election rent and land sale funds.
Reports on the White Haven Hospital for Poor Consumptives praise ongoing work. Thirty six patients from Luzerne county show marked improvement and some resume daily tasks. Elmer Stockdale oversees the institution with satisfaction though not a medical man. A house physician will reside there, and Dr. Elmer of Philadelphia was chosen for the role.
At St Ann's church a reception was held under the Daughters of Mary Sodality for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception with over 100 applicants to join the society. The sermon by Father Hefferon of Hazleton was followed by benediction and included participation by Fathers Fallihee Fleming and visiting priests. Judge P P Smith faces a retirement bid after a governor appointed medical inquiry found him unable to perform duties. he fights retirement with lawyers. Constable Adam Strunk’s killer Charles Grether and fellow inmate Daniel Van Buskirt escaped Monroe county jail again yesterday.

Reverend William O Hara arrives in Harleigh for first services at the new assignment. Local residents arrive from Philadelphia and Wales, with family updates and illnesses noted. A fatal fire destroys a double dwelling at Sandy Run owned by M S Kemmerer Co. Local jurors, legal actions, estate appointments, and various town updates follow, including civic, business, and personal notices.
