Witnesses describe Coxe Bros and other operators at Scranton hearings as damaging to Coxe Bros & Co. while unionists push for a settlement. Andrew Matey, ex-District 7 official, testified on foremen influence, dangerous conditions, and wage disparities faced by Slavonian workers brought to Coxe mines.
Testimony shows a miner averaging about $300 yearly after thirty years in the mines and having left Luzerne county only once during a late strike. Austrian John Favart, once with Coxe Brose Co., says he saved only $60 in seven years. W H Dettrey recalled, presenting correspondence with the company about re employing 439 men.
Elmer Kirschner of West Hazleton a carpenter boss at Cranberry died from injuries after a mining accident Wednesday night Gustave Strack of Hazleton also a carpenter at the mine died at the hospital two hours after admission The fatalities occurred when a runaway truck struck a car carrying workers as pumps were returned to the mine after a strike Kirschner and Strack were riding on the bumper when struck and thrown several feet
Ex Sheriff Harvey, Republican rival, filed papers in Wilkesbarre to contest Bernard Ferry’s legislature election. Harvey alleges fraud with an ongoing investigation. Ferry won by 49 votes 2877 to 2828. The legislature session begins January 5, contest to be decided weeks later.
Mrs Mary A Grover wife of Butler Grover of Hobbie died while visiting her daughter Mrs A H Schobert in Wilkes Barre. She was 69 and survived by her husband and ten children including J B Grover Peckville Millard Grover Kingston M E Grover Freeland Miss H M Grover Shickshinny Warren Grover Scranton Laura Grover Hobbie and Mrs A H Schobert. Burial occurred yesterday in Wilkes Barre.
The bonds of Jobo Mainwaring register of wills elect were filed totaling 55000 with 30000 for the register of wills 10000 for the clerk of the orphans court and 15000 for inheritance tax collection. The bonds of Patrick Finn Thomas Smith and Jacob Schappert county commissioners elect were filed at 5000 each with listed sureties.
Mrs. Anthony Coll died early this morning at her Hazleton home after contracting a cold while caring for furniture on eviction day in Jeddo. She leaves husband, two children, and her mother Mrs. Branigan. Aged 42, funeral Monday with interment at St Ann's Cemetery Freeland.
