Alfalfa and sweet clover in full bloom less likely to cause bloat than immature clover wet with dew or rain. Keep cows off pasture until dry. Provide salt and slaked lime. Feed cows before turning to pasture. Prolonged feeding of sweet clover can cause fatal internal bleeding, especially when moldy or frost damaged. Dehorning or castration may trigger fatal bleeding if sweet clover is the sole roughage.
