FHS Band Set to Perform at TMEA Clinic in San Antonio

Fredericksburg High School will perform at the 45th annual Texas Music Educators Association Clinic Convention in San Antonio on Feb 20 21. Director Tom Rhodes leads a sight reading of three pieces while other groups from Texas Tech Del Mar College and U S Army Band participate. Lt Gov Ben Barnes delivers the keynote as 3500 teachers and 1100 top students attend three days of in service training and concerts with proceeds supporting TMEA activities.

Garretson steer sells for 8500 at Los Angeles auction

The grand champion Angus steer from the San Antonio Livestock Show driven by Susan Garretson sold for 8500 in a Friday sale in Los Angeles. Texstar Corporation of San Antonio bought the steer. Rev Kermit Menking had a Thursday auto accident on U S 87 between Comfort and San Antonio, his pickup overturned after skidding on slick pavement. total loss but no serious injuries.

City Grants Telephone Rate Increase in Fredericksburg

Fredericksburg city officials approved a General Telephone Company rate increase on February 10 after lengthy consideration. Mayor Sidney Henke said the approval was reluctant but necessary as court action loomed. The increase takes effect March 1, 1969, amid ongoing criticism of service.

Golf Course Fees Set At City Commission Meeting

City Commission set fees for Lady Bird Johnson Park municipal golf course. Weekday greens fee $1.50, holidays and weekends $2.00. high school students 50 cents weekdays, $1.00 holidays and weekends. Family memberships scale from 100 dollars for the first member to 6.25 for the fifth, with out-of-town rates starting at 75 for the first member. Cart rental 6 dollars, own-cart use 3 dollars. Course opening targeted for late March for limited play, full park opening likely late May or early June.

Senator Word Reports On State Work For Lions Club

Senator J P Word of District 16 spoke to a large Lions Club meeting at Sunday House Restaurant Convention Center. He discussed the Nimitz Memorial Museum in Fredericksburg, the push to create a state museum commission, and education topics including Governor allocations and rural school consolidations.

Nimitz Museum Bill Advances in Texas House

The Texas House approved House Bill 54 to appoint a nine member commission to administer the Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz Memorial Naval Museum in Fredericksburg. Representative Gerhardt Schulle introduced the bill and briefed Dr. V B. Spiva before noon as passage occurred. The measure moves to the Senate with Senator J P Word listed as sponsor.

Security State Bank Named County Depository

The Security State Bank and Trust of Fredericksburg was named county depository for 1969 70 by the Gillespie County Commissioners Court after being the sole bidder for the past two years. The court also authorized bids for a courthouse roof, approved cab purchases for motor graders and loaders, allowed a newer front loader for Precinct 4, and granted a petition for new county roads in Precinct 3 including routes near Park Road 49 east of the Junction School Building and from Christadelphian Cemetery.

Former Local Teacher Dies In Auto Accident

Ruby Berry 46 former fifth grade teacher in Fredericksburg Public School was killed Friday morning February 14 in a auto crash on the way to Cedar Hill School near Dallas. She died at the hospital. Funeral services were held February 16 at 2 30 p m Church of Christ Mans field southeast of Fort Worth. She is survived by husband Mevin Berry two sons Tony and Frwayne and a daughter.

Hill Country Memorial Hospital plans near completion

The Hill Country Memorial Hospital drawings near completion are to be received by the hospital board within two weeks. Alfred Crenwelge, board chair, cites a letter from William M. Collier Jr. praising progress and urging fast continuation to have plans released to bidders by April 1 and awarded by May 1 if possible. The 14 acre site on Highway 16 South sits opposite Fredericksburg High School.
