The annual turkey dinner sponsored by the Public School Band Boosters will be held Sunday. Proceeds support band programs and student activities at FHS. Tickets are available at the school office and from band members.
Memorial Presbyterian Church and First United Methodist host Dr. Stuart D. Currie for a Lent Bible lecture series with 7 30 p m Wednesday sessions at First United Methodist. after each talk, a social hall discussion follows. Currie, NT language professor, will speak except Holy Week. A Maundy Thursday communion is planned.
A record number of dogs and cats were vaccinated over two Saturdays in Fredricksburg as veterinarians James Witcher Paul Phillips Jr and Curtis Eckhardt led an anti rabies campaign vaccinating 865 pets. Dr Witcher also vaccinated 27 pets for the Doss 4 H Club drive.
Scientists report that more than 5,000 new species and insects are identified annually, highlighting ongoing biodiversity gains as researchers document diverse flora and fauna across continents.
Miss Ella Moses an 83 year old Fredericksburg resident and member of a pioneer Gillespie County family died February 7 from injuries suffered in a traffic collision at the Bowie and West Main Streets intersection. She was a passenger in the Mosel car driven by her sister Bertha Mosel and was thrown from the front seat when it collided with J. C. Moellendorf’s vehicle. The Moellendorf car struck a utility pole and ended overturned after the impact.
Gillespie County taxpayers kept a near perfect tax payment record with an average 96 percent collection for the period ending January 31. Milton Durst reported boosts from late payments and noted penalties apply to amounts due by Jan 31. Total Oct 1 to Jan 31 collections reached $535,072.26 with 4,600 voter registration certificates issued.
City and County peace officers recovered a large booty of stolen merchandise from a house on Granite Avenue tied to Joe Sanchez. Sanchez, 49, is jailed on charges of receiving and concealing stolen property. Merchandise came from multiple local and area burglaries, including the Clarence Reed home north of Fredericksburg and hunting cabins along Crabapple Creek and the Wesley Crenwelge ranch. Susan Garretson, nine, daughter of George and Mrs. Garretson, showed a 1125 pound Aber deen Angus to the steer grand championship at the 20th annual San Antonio Livestock Show Exposition. The Gillespie County entry marked the third time a local youth won top steer honors, following 1951 and 1985 wins. Proceeds from the auction Friday will sell her champion Ace.
Dennis Wayne Schonberg 19 of Fredericksburg was killed Feb 2 1969 in Guang Tri Province Republic of Vietnam while serving in the Marine Corps. Word reached his family Feb 7. He had departed for Vietnam in September.
The sale of Schumann-Houston Motor Company and transfer of the local Ford Agency to Behrends Ford Sales closes the city’s longest automotive career. G A Dick Schumann began in 1923 with Willys-Overland, later moving among Hohmann and Stehling Taylor Burke and others before returning to Fredericksburg in 1944. He led a large used car operation, then formed Schumann Houston in 1955, selling Ford to Kenneth Rothe of Behrend Garage, now Behrends Ford Sales.
Dennis Wayne Schonberg's funeral is planned for Thursday at a Beckmann Funeral Home with full military honors by local veterans groups and a Fort Sam Houston honor guard. He will be buried in Greenwood Cemetery.
Schonberg born September 28 1949 Braham Minnesota died from fragmentation wounds in Vietnam. He trained at Camp Pendleton and was in a defensive position when attacked. A military funeral will be held with Beckmann Funeral Home in charge and Greenwood Cemetery interment to follow. No definite date pending body arrival in Fredericksburg. He resided at 627 West Main Street with father Henry and sisters Linda and Carol.
Four Gillespie County Lutheran churches will exchange pulpits during Lent with pastors Rev. Will Rotter Rev. Leroy Deans Rev. Kermit Menking and Rev. Norman Truesdell preaching in Bethany Holy Ghost Zion Fredericksburg and Trinity Stonewall. Lent begins Ash Wednesday February 19 with an overall Days of the Cross theme.
Fredericksburg issues a permit to Robert Pape for a native stone barber shop building at 101 West San Antonio Street. The 38 by 25 foot structure, to be erected by Great Texas Lumber Company, replaces old Moellendorf property near Nimitz Museum. A separate note lists Bernhard Pehl authorized for a $13,000 residence at 904 North Adams Street.
