54th Fair Tops In Entertainment And Exhibits

The 54th annual Gilespie County Fair closed after a three day expo with strong crowds. On Friday the rodeo broke a regional record when W O Davis roped a calf and timed 2 3/5 seconds, beating the previous 3.5 seconds. Calf tie down times on Saturday reached 12 to 13.1 seconds as top finishers. Horse races Friday through Sunday drew fast times and thrills for local fans.

4 H Club Exhibits Draw Crowd At Gillespie County Fair

Gillespie County 4 H Club showcased 66 exhibits including corn cotton peanuts maize and poultry judged by N E Scudder county agent of Comanche County who called it the largest best display he has seen Winners included Hugo Dietrich Chester Bauer Harold Ottmers Charles Sagebiel Herbert Jung and Leroy Fuhrmann First and second prize winners will go to the Dallas Fair The boys thank the Gillespie County Fair Association for support.

Mrs Lewis A Stevens presents a music and expression recital at Harper Presbyterian church on Thursday August 31 at 8 p m. School District Consolidation Elections Set for August 26

Voters in Gillespie and Kimble counties will decide on consolidating the Pocket Common School District and the Divide Common School District with the Harper Independent Consolidated School District. County Judge Henry Hirsch ordered the elections after petitions from property owners. Presiding judges R A Rogers and H M Wendel will oversee the polls.

St Mary's Parochial School Opens 1939 40 Term

St Marys Parochial School begins its 1939 40 term on Tuesday September 5. St Marys High School earned State accreditation entitling graduates to enter state colleges without exams, with credits granted in 13 subjects. Last springs graduates were the first to benefit from the new accreditation. Mr and Mrs Dan Wiley and family of Houston and Mr and Mrs Paul Kirchenwitz of Waco visited with Mr and Mrs Fritz Joseph over the past weekend.

New Test Schedule For Driver and Chauffeur Licenses

The State Department of Public Safety will cut examiner staff from 82 to 32 and change testing to the first and third Tuesdays each month from 9 to 11 a m. Tests for new license applicants move to the Gillespie County Court House first floor after August 20 with the new office location and start date September 5.

First Bale of 1939 Cotton Ginned in Gillespie County

The first bale of cotton for the 1939 Gillespie County season was ginned at Borchers Gin in Fredericksburg on Thursday August 17. It was raised by Edwin Klein of Willow City and was the sole exhibit at the Gillespie County Fair.

Hiram Hodges of Gillespie County won first place and Champion of the Show with Hale peaches at the Texas Peach and Fruit Show in Stephenville on August 16. County fruit growers and visitors from Gillespie County attended the exhibit, highlighting the county's fruit quality.

Budget Adopted by Gillespie County Commissioners Court

Gillespie County Commissioners Court in August session adopted the annual budget listing probable revenues and expenditures for the coming year. County Judge Hy Hirsch prepared the budget under state law. Panther Seen In Hayden Ranch Section

Chester Fiedler reports sighting a large mountain lion on the Frank Feller Ranch near Tivydale Road in Hayden Ranch early Monday. The animal fled into thick brush after spotting Feller as game warden Adolph Heep organized a hound pursuit, but the trail went cold and the hunt failed.

District Court Term Opens in Gillespie County Courthouse

The first term of District Court convened in Gillespie County’s new Courthouse led by District Judge Raymond Gray. District Attorney Carlos Ashley District Clerk E L Schmidt Sheriff Alfred Klaerner and Court Reporter Bishop attended. Sixteen prospective grand jurors were named with twelve chosen to serve in the new grand jury chamber. cases were disposed of promptly in the opening days.

Clinton Burrier Fatally Injured In Comfort Road Crash

Clinton Burrier aged 28 died after a reversing car collided with a Cosden Oil truck on Comfort Highway near Fredericksburg. The oncoming truck driven by Jack Oates struck the Burrier vehicle just behind the cabin. He died at 8 45 p m after hospital arrival. Funeral services were held August 23 at the First Baptist Church with burial in the City Cemetery.

Liquor Board Reassigns Two District Officials

C H De Wolfe who supervised four Hill Country counties including Kerr Bandera and Llano is moved to Central East Texas with roots in Corsicana. Charles Schuch, ex Austin District, is named director of the new district and will keep Fredericksburg as his headquarters.
