District Court Dispatches Many Docketed Civil and Criminal Cases
Gillespie County District Court in its second week at the new courthouse disposed of numerous civil and criminal matters before Judge Raymond Gray. Indictments from a thirteen bill Grand Jury were returned and later corrected. several defendants pled guilty or were sentenced to prison terms. Civil actions include note suits, divorces, and a partition, with several cases continued or dismissed. Jury trials are expected in the court’s third week.

Chairman Teer Dies After Train Strike Near San Antonio Hospital
Claude Teer longtime Texas official and chairman of the State Board of Control was killed August 28 after being struck by a moving train near the San Antonio State Hospital. Inquest by Judge O L Wiley said Teer was walking at 6 am when he encountered the tracks. He had been staying with Dr W J Johnson, hospital superintendent, while recovering from a nervous breakdown from overwork. Teer began as Williamson County Justice of the Peace, later served in the Legislature and as Highway Commission secretary. Governor Moody appointed him to the Board in 1928, later reappointed by Governors Sterling and Allred. The Board oversees state purchases and more than 20 charitable institutions. The state flag was lowered in his honor. Funeral services were held August 29 at Cook Funeral Home in Austin and he was buried in the State Cemetery near Stephen F. Austin’s tomb. He is survived by his widow Clara Wayman Teer and daughter Anna Faye Peterson.

Gillespie County students return to school after vacation
Several thousand Gillespie County students resume classes with Williams Creek opening early and other rural schools starting next week. The public schools report 9 a.m. registration led by Superintendent S. H. Smyre with an anticipated high school enrollment around 350 and longer class periods to 70 minutes in some grades. The district funds supported a new rock fence and a football field with 350 bleacher seats, aiming for a October 20 dedication during a home game against district opponents.
