New York reports panic at the Knickerbocker Trust with about $60 million in deposits, crowds pressed for withdrawals, police kept order, and officials saying the suspension is temporary though liquidity strained. Stocks plunged with Union Pacific, Reading, St. Paul hitting sharp losses as bank loan pools form to stabilize the market.
At the Knickerbocker Trust main office on Broadway and at the 25th street branch crowds formed before opening. Allen, acting second vice president, said the bank is solvent with 8 million four hundred thousand dollars in cash and ready to meet demands. Depositors arrived by carriage as lines grew. a Bronx branch run was halted by unloading large bundles of currency from wagons.
Washington official Comptroller Ridgeley says advices from New York this morning are reassuring and the financial situation there should improve. The statement comes as updates continue on page two.
Mary Penrose Wayne Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution unveiled a boulder monument at the head of Wayne Trace marking the old highway used by General Wayne’s army. The bronze plate notes Wayne Trace as the Indian trail to Cincinnati and cites the fort’s 1794 naming by Major Hamtramck.
William J. Bryan spoke at Cooper Union in New York before a packed audience, signaling the likely planks of the Democratic platform. He criticized the metropolitan press as controlled by unknown owners and praised the Oklahoma constitution while calling out “cornfield lawyers.”

William E Walling of Indianapolis and his wife with Rose Strunsky were freed after 24 hours in a crowded prison. Officials regret the arrest blamed on a spy's report. They plan to leave St Petersburg Wednesday. papers and manuscripts restored. The embassy aided release as prosecutors are overloaded.
Governor J Frank Hanly attended an Associated Charities conference in Evansville and then visited Col Frank B Posey at a farm near Yankeetown Indiana. He toured the hills with Judge W Holman of the tuberculosis commission to inspect a prospective tuberculosis farm site along the Ohio river.
President Theodore Roosevelt arrived in Nashville amid a festive show of bunting flags and crowds from nearby counties. A long parade escorted Roosevelt and officials to the Ryman Auditorium, then to the Hermitage where he was presented amid formal greetings by local leaders and Mrs. Rachel Jackson Lawrence.
Daniel Frederick Beyerle, 65, fell into a four foot ditch on Goshen road five miles northwest of the city late Monday afternoon and died instantly from a broken neck. Found by Arthur Hubler with head submerged in water and mud, Beyerle had left Washington township with produce earlier that day. Coroner Stults reported no struggle. funeral arrangements set for Thursday morning at 9:30 and 11 o clock at Eel River Baptist Church. Beyerle, German native and longtime Allen county farmer, left a widow and eleven children.
Four balloons from St. Louis in the international balloon race passed near Marion Indiana, two over the northern city and two between Marion and Fairmount fourteen miles away. They traveled eastward at a fast pace, remaining visible for about half an hour. Reports placed one balloon ten miles north at 8:14 am. Sightings outside Marion at Prescot and Fairland were not confirmed.
A morning message dropped at 10:45 from McCoy and Chandler describes three balloons sighted since early morning. One balloon was ahead several miles away and higher and faster, with two others south and behind as the craft moved slowly east by south.
Three balloons passed over Battle Ground just north of Lafayette Indiana at 9 am observers reported. They were high in the air and moved rapidly in an easterly direction.
In Richmond Indiana a balloon passed about five miles south of the city at 10 am while sailing southeast. Five or six balloons are seen over Indiana today with colors red white and yellow as they travel east and northeast across Crawfordsville Rensselaer Shelbyville Marion and New Augusta. The weather is clear and cool.
A yellow colored balloon sailed low and passed Prescott at 7 48 am seven miles east of Shelbyville Ind. and then moved over Fairland as observed by local residents.
Fort Wayne residents scanned southern skies for approaching balloons amid reports of balloons sighted in Logansport Peru Rich Valley and Wabash. Crowds gathered at the court house dome hoping to glimpse aerial racers but no sightings were confirmed locally.
Reports from St Louis indicate nine balloons in the International Aeronautic Cup race dispersed by variable winds. Balloons were seen northeast and west of St Louis with one said to be crossing toward Tennessee and several near the Great Lakes region.
Fontanet Indiana woke to ruins after the DuPont powder mill explosion that killed 35 and injured 600. Indiana National Guard patrolled the town to deter looting while investigators probed the cause. Debris searches continued as coffins arrived from Terre Haute and repair crews began rehousing damaged homes.
