A Du Pont Powder mill near Fontanet Indiana exploded destroying the town. Eighteen bodies were taken to the morgue and about 1,200 residents became homeless. Dozens were injured as a powder magazine later blew apart, with many people pleading for relief and aid arriving by carriages and autos.
The Fontanet blast shook Fort Wayne causing hundreds of inquiries at local phone offices and The Sentinel. Residents near Vesey greenhouses reported clear tremors and several homes in Lakeside rocked as the blast spread rumors and prompted investigations.
Washington October hearing before the Interstate Commerce Commission drew five commissioners and wide railroad representation to consider a uniform bill of lading to regulate freight moves nationwide. Petitioners led by the Minor Manufacturers association urged adoption, while a joint carrier committee proposed a replacement form for existing bills of lading starting January first.
Next Tuesday October 22 marks the anniversary of Fort Wayne naming and the first salute to the frontier post. Mary Penrose Wayne chapter D A R sets the date for unveiling the boulder marking Wayne trace on a triangular city plot donated by D F Sieling. Mrs F J Rahe presides with addresses by P A Randall and B Paul Mossman at 3 p.m.
Supreme Lodge of the Order of Moose began a two day session in Indianapolis with about 100 delegates attending from across the country. Retiring supreme dictator M M Dunlap of Anderson presides as Curtiss Gregg of Greensburg Pa is the sole candidate for the next term.
Dr. George W. Crile professor of surgery at Western Reserve Medical College in Cleveland will address the Twelfth District Medical Society in the assembly room of the courthouse this city on October 29. His topic is Surgery of the Head and Neck.
A renewal of conflict between Fort Wayne and Wabash Valley Traction and Cleveland Trinidad Asphalt Paving over East Washington street blocked streetcar service for two months. After heated exchanges, the Board of Public Works mediated, securing a noon deadline lift and a pledge to keep tracks clear.
Lafayette Indiana October 12 The W C T U convention at Trinity church drew steady attendance as officers were reelected except one and a diamond medal contest attracted many. Mrs Culla Waylinger of Hartville was named president Lizzie Stanley Liberty vice president Mary E Woodard Fountain City corresponding secretary Rose Pearce Cayuga recording secretary Clara Sears Anderson treasurer Ida Mix Kokomo L T L secretary Mary St Craig Upland Y secretary and trustees Lizzie Hann Indianapolis Lyda Outland Upland Ida Mix Kokomo and Rose Sears filled an unexpired term. The diamond medal contest followed with contestants who had earned prior gold and silver badges and a gold bar and eagle shield medal awarded to the winner.
Kansas City report says George Smiley 17 shot Lizzie Schoeffer 42 in their home while defending her from a burglar. He led police to a dramatic account, burglar fled with $135 and jewelry, no trace found. Police back his story and expect his release.
A Pennsylvania railroad mail sack accident at Hamlet Indiana injured Mrs. Albertina Kile. The Porter circuit court ruled the railroad not responsible for mail agents actions and awarded judgment for the defense. Conductor James Rowan and Engineer J C McCarthy operated the train involved.
Henry Hilleke, after twenty years in Pennsylvania boiler shops, was named assistant janitor at the city hall to succeed Martin Schamm. He lives at 18 Hendricks street and presented a large petition to the board of works signed by nearly all company shopmen.
In Boise on October 15 the Pettibone trial for alleged complicity in the Governor’s assassination faced postponement as defense cited the defendant’s condition. Proceedings continued with limited details as experts evaluated his fitness to stand trial.
The Allen County grand jury reported to Judge Edward O Rourke at 2 00 p m Saturday and issued 197 indictments the highest in county history. Several cases were dismissed or not indicted including the Woodburn murder and the bribery allegations against County Commissioner Tonkle. A number of indictments target saloonkeepers under the Sunday closing law. Several individuals face charges from rape to grand larceny while others, including Clyde Jackson and Henry Hahn, are discharged for lack of evidence. The report notes good jail conditions and commends Sheriff Grice and his wife. Continued on Page Two.
Fort Wayne ladies plan to interview Miss Helen Gould during a brief train stop to enlist support for a YWCA home. A committee led by W. E. Mossman Col D. N. Foster and A. H. Perfect reported plans for site canvassing and fundraising. The project advances toward likely success.
Morristown New Jersey October 15 Miss Ida S Scott sister of Mrs Augustus Hartje of Pittsburg whose husband seeks a divorce has left Miss Danas seminary where she had enrolled since term began She is 19 years old It was not known until recently that she was connected with the Pittsburg affair.
In Barcelona on October 15 the Guadealmedina river again overran its banks causing ongoing damage and prompting concern as several people were affected.
Charles S. Bush declares the Maumee river project to make the waterway from Fort Wayne to Toledo wholly feasible and urgent for northern Indiana. He argues freight relief and economic gains for farmers, stock raisers and manufacturers, citing water competition saving freight costs and urging congressional action. He notes government work on similar nine foot channels and a private lake Erie to Pittsburg waterway with a $150 million price tag.
E. W. Cook C. F. Bicknell and E. H. Merritt depart for a pleasure trip through Texas and Mexico. The group plans to be away for about ten days, exploring a large portion of the south.
