A Legrand Iowa death report details Helena Helverson a 29 year old Norwegian born woman who died from leprosy. Physicians call it a freak of skipping generations as the disease, obscure until last June, progressed rapidly and caused death yesterday. It marks the second leprosy death in the state with both victims from Norway.
Fred Nieman, a young man of Warsaw Indiana, was sandbagged and robbed of $60. He was found in a semi conscious state and could not clearly recall the incident. Two rough youths, previously known for scrapes, are suspected. A lead pencil and a revolver were his remaining possessions.
New York August 4 Mr Cleveland remains the favorite with slight odds. Republicans talk big but back little cash. Prohibition and free trade issues heat up Indiana campaigning with prominent colored orators like Gandison and Outland rallying support for the Democrats while denying votes to rivals.
A six story brick tailoring shops building near the Bowery burned yesterday afternoon trapping nearly 100 Polish Jewish workers. Eighteen people died as the blaze raged and workers leaped from third and fourth story windows or succumbed to smoke before firefighters could control the flames.
The Pratt county recorder notes the largest mortgage filed to date, a 8 600 000 loan from the Indianapolis Ohio and Springfield Railroad company on its Pekin Illinois to Springfield Ohio line. The mortgage is held by Central Trust Company of New York and is the road's first lien.
The Fort Wayne Dispatch accuses Colonel O Rourke of a long history of opposition to the Democratic ticket and a failure to vote straight Democratic. It cites the 1865 auditor race in Allen County and names Democrats he opposed, labeling him a chronic kicker and bolter. The piece asserts strong Democratic opposition to his possible congressional nomination and urges a prompt reply.
Oxicaco August 4 the assistant state's attorney says the grand jury has found indictments against Sumner Welch and Sawyer Starkey of the Chicago City Railway company for tampering with juries Welch recently received a six month prison term by Judge Hawes who recommended the grand jury investigate Welch Starkey and President Holthes For further action remains to be seen
The Republican county central committee met this afternoon and fixed Saturday September 8 as the date of the county convention. A baby was found on Mr George Haseert's Walton avenue doorstep tucked in a basket about twenty four hours old. Mrs Hassert will care for it until arrangements are made. The president stayed at Oakview all day in Washington considering bills awaiting action.
Governor Oglesby and family visited Camp Lincoln when a horse harness broke on a hill and the carriage ran away. He tried to jump free but was thrown into a ravine, sustaining bruises. The driver regained control on a bridge as Mrs. Oglesby and their son stayed in the carriage.
Ormormwall Aug 4 John Robinson the veteran showman died at 8 this morning after weeks in critical condition. He spent most of his life in circus management and was succeeded by his sons in recent years. He amassed a large fortune and remained vigorous until shortly before his death.
A telegram from Evasviaux Indiana dated August 3 reports Prof Otto A Schmidt leader of the Liederkranz society found dead at his residence from heat prostration. The 103 degree shade reading sparked two other local heat fatalities. Schmidt, German born linguist and musician, taught in Richmond Fort Wayne Chicago and Evanaville, directing choirs and leading Saengerfest of 1885.
Mr. A. J. Enyart, head of the exchange, is missing. Mr. Wilson from Chicago now runs the office and says Enyart has been absent a week. Enyart holds company money and papers, with no clear reason for disappearance, though gambling is suspected. He previously ran exchanges in Elkhart and Michigan City.
Ottawa reports daily on grasshopper plagues with officials and locals noting vast swarms. A local naturalist estimated more than a hundred million grasshoppers per square mile in the infected area.
The city undertakers report a long list of deaths from various causes this week. Names include Nora Perry aged 10 months with brain fever, Susan Glass 18, Arthur Blondell 12, Edward Smedly 44, Graydon Hobson 5 months, Verda Bricher 1 year, Louis Feist 2 months, Mary Graham 75, Carl Welder 6 months, John Hueber 16 days, H Woehbaker 2 days, Louia Balzer 8, Anna Christie 1, Harry Wager 5 months, child of John Koenig one day, Elizabeth Behrman 34, Wilhelmina Renken 80, Edith Crawford 1, Edwin Faerfer 4 months, William Behrman 4 months, among others.
The Aug 8 execution of Blinky Morgan, real name Charles McDonald, in Oconomius Ohio ended in a failed hang. Morgan spoke farewell to Nellie and died after a protracted strangulation. He had warned of innocence and suggested witnesses could prove his Philadelphia alibi.
Steamship Arabis arrives from Hong Kong and Japan reporting cholera in Amoy held in check while Chang Chow records 3000 deaths in sixty days. Mount Iwasenura erupts destroying 56 houses. 400 people and 30 houses buried at Bira village. Other items include Italy protesting Massonahi occupation, Osmót visit to Fontainebleau, Seville cathedral roof collapse, and Austrian Hungarian anarchist trials suspended for a year.
The Lagrange Democrat argues for Hon. R. C. Bell as best able to save Democratic votes in Fort Wayne and strengthen the state ticket. It cautions the convention to pick a candidate who can carry Allen County, warning against outsiders, and pledges vigorous backing for Bell or alternate favorites if Bell fails.
Isaac P. Gray asks Attorney General Lewis T. Michener to visit Crawford County to pursue speedy prosecutions against the White Caps and to aid in apprehending and convicting members. He also requests action in Perry County to suppress the White Caps outrages and bring promoters to justice, with a full report later.

Forged mortgages claimed to be signed by Edmund R. Kearsley formerly of Detroit and now in Bucyrus Ohio were found. Money was obtained on them by H W Sterling a nephew of Kearsley. Sterling is at his summer residence at Grosse Isle in the Detroit river about twenty five years old and married about eighteen months.
New Years August 4 report lists Reserve down 365 800 loans 2 215 000 specie 525 900 legal tender 512 800 deposits 1 410 800 circulation 78 800 decline. Bank held 26 950 875 excess of the 25 percent rule. Also reports a Monroeville Saturday runaway accident where a woman fractured her collar bone.
A dispatch claimed ex State Treasurer Fleming would run Indiana campaign finances under President’s guidance. Fleming says the report is false, noting only a private Washington call with the president for a brief moment. He traveled east on private business and will not oversee campaign finances.
The Toledo Bee notes a crowded courtroom today for a motion to dissolve the preliminary injunction in the Mahoning muddle. The case is expected to occupy the entire week as proceedings unfold. Italian laborers on a rampage near Ottawa Findlay line clash over pay. The Allegheny construction firm paid off dozens of workers after threats. Warrants issued for leaders, but many still at large. The company resolves to stop employing Italians in future projects.
In Lafayette Indiana yesterday morning nineteen year old William Ellsworth was killed near the White River bridge after a confrontation with Oliver White and a group of local youths known as the Dirty Dozen. Ellsworth fell after a brick struck him and White fired the fatal shot. Ellsworth died moments later. Ellsworth was the son of Dr. J T Ellsworth, a former local physician.
Andrew Carnegie and partners prepare a private railway from the Edgar Thompson steel plant at Bessemers to the lake, building more than sixty miles of track to connect at Minerva Ohio with the Cleveland Youngstown and Alliance line, which Carnegie Bros. & Co. already operate to Phalanx near Lake Erie. The line will extend to the water’s edge, with rolling stock and project costs exceeding 2 million dollars.
Elisha Gray of Springfield Illinois has secured July 31 1888 patent letters for a telantograph a transmitter and receiver system to send messages by wire from the sender’s handwriting without skilled operators. The patent rests on a new principle that produces pulsatory current unlike earlier variable current methods. Bernard Hutker appeals the Miller road case from Milan township to the circuit court.
Edward G Smedly a Toledo boot and shoe salesman died by suicide in a Churubusco Whitely county hotel room after a troubled visit on business for Dewey Rogers Co He left a wife two children and siblings in the east and held life and accident policies totaling 15000 toward his heirs
New York New Yerr reports Frank Menizer a German employed at Schneider’s brewery in New Brunswick New Jersey was bitten on the wrist weeks ago by a dog. The wound was cauterized and he seemed well until recently when hydrophobia symptoms appeared and worsened despite treatment. Doctors attend but can do nothing as spasms recur.
Tuesday night highwaymen attacked Mr Laurent’s home near Hadley, firing a dozen bullets, breaking in, and ransacking the house. They escaped with little money and valuables. Laurent lies critically ill under medical care as the neighborhood seeks clues.
Amanda M Gottschall, wife of Jeremiah Gottschall, living near Harrisonville, was in a barn yard milking when a young cow attacked and fatally injured her. She crawled to the house before dying yesterday. She was daughter of a leading Scipio Township farmer.
Cutcaco August 8 heavy thunder storm and lightning struck one of the twenty stables at Halsted and Forty-third streets. The flames spread to a second barn destroying both structures with their contents and twenty horses. Loss is $15,000, fully insured. Rain aided firefighters and prevented a total sweep of the barns.
Jacob Erb a prominent Roanoke farmer died at his home on July 28 at age 67. One of Whitley county’s oldest settlers he lived there almost 50 years and left seven children, six daughters and one son. His daughter Mrs Stephen M Brown of this city attended the funeral, the largest ever held in Roanoke.
May Patton of Johnstown Pa shot and killed Charles DeKnight of Lawrenceville then killed herself in a Metropolitan hotel room. DeKnight, a Pullman car conductor, and Patton registered under aliases. a found letter to Jessie Thurlow Huntingdon Pa referenced a planned death.
On Monday evening Mr and Mrs John Krock celebrated their twentieth wedding anniversary. The list of presents includes fancy china tea set from Martin Noll and family and several Noll relatives, a fancy china dinner set from multiple donors, half dozen china dinner plates from Jacob and Mrs Miller, and numerous other gifts such as water pitchers, cups and saucers, linen towels, oyster bowls, and glass dishes from friends and neighbors including the Brines, Amen, Laner, Romery, Brachett, Base, and Mierding households. The record enumerates who gave each item and the recipients, preserving the social domestic gift exchange of the time.
Two well developed glanders cases were found in the city involving horses owned by Willis Pearse and Frank Gruber. After diagnosis by Dr. A J Read and Supt McNaitt, the affected animals were shot to prevent spread. Authorities say no broader outbreak is evident, with only isolated cases and other horses unaffected.
Oliver Babcock Robert White and John Wolke were jailed before Justice France for shooting Farmer Firestone's horse. Babcock admitted the act claiming accident during a dog hunt. Firestone sought 500 then settled at 250 for horse and distress, with White paying 19 Wolke 19 and Babcock 24 in fines.
A special dispatch from Wabash reports James Drew of Indianapolis and E W Shirk of Peru plan a new Evansville Fort Wayne and Chicago railroad following the towpath route. The Lafayette to Fort Wayne segment of 100 plus miles will be built next summer as standard gauge with 65-pound rails. The line would run parallel to the Wabash and compete directly, with minimal grading and a full corps of engineers to arrive within three weeks. Backers beyond towpath owners remain undisclosed at present.
Wm. F. McNagny of Columbia City called at the News office last Thursday to canvass support for his Congress bid. Delegates from his county plan enthusiastic backing, and those who met him feel he would be a sound nomination choice.
Congressman White of the Fort Wayne district, who declared in congress that the whisky and tobacco tax burden weighed on the laboring classes, has been renominated by acclamation. White may not appeal as strongly to workingmen as he did two years ago.
In New York on August 2, Frank Murphy of England and Jack Havlin of Boston fought forty nine rounds over $1000 a side at Verplanck's Point on the Hudson. The Jute Manufacturers Association appears to hold sufficient output control over bagging mills in St. Louis Mun cie and other cities. Heads include Warren Jones and Grantz with Southern and Standard mills in St. Louis and Muncie Indiana. Major eastern mills Waterbury Boston Nevins join in the cartel. Several mills in St. Louis Peru Crescent New Orleans Louisville and others have shut down. The fixed price stands at eleven and three fourths cents, yielding about four and three fourths cents profit per yard.
