In Wilkes Barre on August 10 Joseph Richards fourteen drives a mule in the Murray shaft when a runaway train of five loaded cars strikes him. His head enters the mule's abdomen and he is severely hurt. Miners rescue him. he revived briefly but faces possible death as skull fractures are reported and the mule dies.
