Telegraphic report from Indianapolis states the prohibition amendment has passed both houses. It would permanently prohibit manufacturing or selling intoxicating liquors except for scientific medical mechanical and sacramental purposes. If approved by the next legislature and by popular vote it becomes part of the state constitution.
Quenec April 8 the Canadian records a strange apparition seen by the captain and crew of a schooner between Murray Bay and Kamouraska. A fifty foot long monster with fins on its back and a sharklike head rose partly from the water and floundered, causing the surrounding water to boil for hundreds of feet.
A hunter named Qiaries shot and killed G. W. Johnson near Litte Rock while aiming at wild turkeys. Johnson, an eccentric recluse living alone in a remote hut, had long hunted and fished in the county. The incident occurred at daybreak as Johnson was secreted in the woods watching for turkeys.
Commissioner Rium faces a clash as Zion Cooperative Society in Salt Lake City issues script circulated as money. The government claims taxation on the 30 issued. Mormons resist further payment, having paid ten thousand of forty thousand demanded. Case moves to court.
A printer named Frank Bailey was found dead in an alleyway in the business portion of the town. Letters and papers show he had worked in the office of the Cleveland Leader. authorities suspect death from dissipation and exposure.
Newsure N Y April 8 reports the Washington headquarters commission seeks state and national government help for the centennial celebration marking peace and the disbandment of the revolutionary army at Washington's headquarters. Judge Chaney of Canal Winchester Ohio died at 91. He was born in Maryland.
A transcription notes Judge Chaney born January 12 1790 served as a Jackson elector in 1832 was elected to Congress in 1886 for three terms and held five terms in the Ohio House and one in the Senate He also sat as associate justice of the circuit court under the old state constitution and was possibly the oldest former member of Congress in the United States.
A masked bandit entered the toll-house east of Crawfordsville on Saturday morning, bound Mrs Gardner and assaulted Miss Lillie Nan Nice. He stole $60 in cash, and the Gravel Road company offers a $200 reward for the capture, with no suspect yet found.
A wagon at the Mayflower gravel road crossing three miles south of Lafayette was struck by a Saturday forenoon train of the Cincinnati Indianapolis St Louis and Chicago line. James Cox, the occupant, had a leg broken below the knee and suffered internal injuries as he was swept into a deep ditch and nearly drowned. The report notes likely fatal injuries.
Oscar Crook was dangerously wounded by Mrs. Wolfe in a frame building on the outskirts of Liberty Indiana. She claims two men tried to force entry last Tuesday and returned Wednesday night. she fired after the first man reached the window. Crook suffered heavy injuries with over fifty shot in his left leg and a principal charge in the right. Police told Crook’s parents are respected locals.warding medical care was sought and Mrs. Wolfe offers to surrender.
Loupon, April 12 reports the Chio correspondent visiting the southeast of the island. Menita has 12,000 inhabitants and villages Nonaster Virinas and Philati massea show ruins on every house. English and American physicians are aiding survivors.
At midnight on April 8 residents of St Paty Bay Quebec felt a quake strong enough to awaken people from sleep. No injuries or damage details provided in the report.
The Missouri River rises further with Lower Yankton submerged forcing evacuations. Ten of fourteen Bonhomme area people rescued. Bates and Haddeman believed drowned. Green Island to Vermillion area reports widespread inundation and ice jams. Vermillion townsite reportedly washed away with thirty lives lost. River widens to six miles at Yankton and expands to fifteen miles eastward for forty five miles.
In Greencastle on Sunday around 2 am burglars entered Mr. Garvey’s tavern room in Carpentersville and stole goods worth about 200 dollars. Garvey and three others pursued along the L N C railroad to a school house on E H Crow’s farm, twelve miles away, where eight tramps were captured and jailed. While searching for the haul, most suspects were found hiding in corn shacks near the school.
Fire destroyed the residence of George Ball near North Madison with two dry houses and household goods. Loss about 2000 dollars, partly insured. Madison plans two packet boats between here and the Kentucky river, one by the Cincinnati and Louisville United States Mail company and the other by the Louisville and Kentucky River Packet company.
CuicaGo reports no confirmed damage to winter wheat in the northwest as inspections continue after snow. Fruit crops, especially peaches, appear damaged though assessment awaits snow melt.
In Danville Virginia on April 6 the thermometer hit 28 degrees freezing ice formed on streams and ponds. Officials fear the entire fruit crop may be ruined by the cold spell.
Philadelphia April 6 Rev Thomas B Miller former pastor of the M E church on Lehigh avenue and dean of the Philadelphia College of Medicine and Surgery resigns from his city posts leaving the church and medical college in a sudden move with details awaiting follow up.
Isaac Hathaway arrested on a coroner's warrant charged with criminal malpractice. Complainant Mary Butler faces imminent danger of death and alleges Miller as principal with Hathaway as assistant in the alleged malpractice.
In Gold Creek thirty miles northwest of Litre Rock Arkansas Patrick Shasen was killed. Authorities accuse Mrs Mayer his divorced wife now jailed awaiting trial. It is alleged she followed him to a lonely railroad spot and stabbed him in a jealous frenzy after asking about remarriage. The couple had married previously but divorced with substantial alimony.
Washington April 6 General McCook on General Sherman’s staff is ordered to join his regiment at White River. Chaplain Mullins takes charge of army education. Secretary Lincoln aims to reform staff appointments to remove complacent officers and assign those with hard service to staff duty while others prove themselves in field roles.
Marion Ind April 7 Joseph Davis a citizen of our city was yesterday adjudged insane by Justices Timony and Stretch and will be moved to the insane hospital in Indianapolis in a few days His insanity is linked to a past affray with Mr Shiply in which Shiply was killed the court verdict at that time was justifiable homicide
The remains of Robert Parke Jr. arrived in Bloomington for interment after being killed Monday night on the Missouri Pacific railroad. He was the son of the late Hon. Robert Parke, a former St. Louis citizen, and nephew of William McCambridge, Bloomington Pantograph city editor.
In Amboy Illinois on April 7 George Bartlett a clerk at Lyman Bros grocery fell through a hatchway after misjudging the elevator floor. He tumbled the remaining two floors and was terribly mangled, with recovery deemed impossible.

The harness shop of F. Hit & Co. relocates from 17 East Main Street to 20 East Columbia Street and will continue operations in the same business.
By authority of the Fort Wayne Common Council the city treasurer will auction lot fifty-eight in Chute's Homestead, Allen County, Indiana. The sale, to satisfy John W. Langohr's claim for alley work, will be at the city court on Friday May 6 1881 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. The property is listed as the estate of John X. Greve. By order of the Allen County Court of Indiana an execution has levied on and will sell at public auction the undivided one fourth parts of specified lands in township 30 north range 12 east. The sale runs from 1 to 4 pm at the courthouse. Additional fee simple interest in the same described premises may be offered if the judgment amount is not fully realized. Frankin K.
