G W Welker, an Illinois swindler who fled after leaving unpaid bills and swindling the Singer Sewing Machine Co, is captured and returned by Marshal Isabell. He had dyed his hair and shaved his beard to avoid recognition and had previously forged bonds for Michael Mayer. Amount swindled remains undetermined.
A Derby village farmer, Richard Welch, is killed by his son Montgomery Welch after the father fired on another son and the mother during a return from a lawyer. The son shot first. the father died at the scene. Welch was described as a well to do farmer.
Ira Miller shot his cousin Samh McKinney at Gilman near Muncie last Monday. He went to Anderson and surrendered to authorities, was charged with manslaughter, bailed at 3000 dollars, and returned to Gilman. Friends of the deceased show little interest in the case.
Mrs. Louisa Sargent of Santa Rita disappeared on Saturday while visiting a neighbor. Her body was found buried near a shepherd camp with evidence of assault and murder. A Mexican shepherd was arrested on suspicion and faced threats of lynching.
The gorge below Mandan partially broke today in Bismarck North Dakota. The river dropped to its original level while residents shove mud and ice from buildings. Ice sheets three to eight feet thick hinder street cleaning and 85,600 railroad ties were displaced.
Cascado April 5 reports John Grin Com of New York City intends to begin a fifty day fast around May 1. He is a man about thirty eight.
In Galena Illinois on April 5 reports describe a copper vein near Mineral Point drawing heavy interest from mining circles. Judge William Spencely received samples said to rival the richest copper belts with a mine yielding about 1 000 pounds daily sold at 50 dollars per 1 000 pounds.
Nashville news reports Tom Hill alias Ross was arrested near the city with two revolvers and 1600 dollars. He is suspected with an accomplice in robbing govt pay agent A. J. Smith of 5000 dollars at Muscle Shoals. Smith identified him as one of the robbers and Hill may be linked to a recent murder in Louisville Georgia.
Mail advices from Ivanpah, San Bernardino county, report stock raiser Daniel Keistler was shot dead after a trifling quarrel. Local Indians handed the killer to authorities but masked men then abducted and hanged him.
A Mansions House bombing plot member named O'Donnell reportedly reached New York last Saturday. Irish groups plan a bay excursion to meet Coleman another plotter aboard the Australian. A third conspirator is said to have wired money and is resting in Paris.

Sedymory Ind April 5 Eddie Swift night watchman in the Ohio and Mississippi yards attempted to couple cars when the drawbars caught his right hand ripping middle and index fingers and thumb and crushing them beyond repair both fingers and thumb were amputated at once in the yard hospital follow up medical care unknown

The two wives of Milton E. Hurley met in Indianapolis and, after discussion with the prosecuting attorney, it was decided the county lacks jurisdiction and he will be transferred to Scott County for trial. Wife No. 2 travels to file an affidavit. Hurley offered two years in prison, but the state declined. His father-in-law warns of forgery charges in Madison County that may be pursued if he avoids broader punishment.
Farrell's Detective Agency received word that Francisco Garguilo, second mate of the bark Ercole, stole $10,000 from the captain and vanished. He and a woman were traced to a Morgan Road freight train and arrested at Bayou DeAllemands after dispatched notices went up the line.

Bridget Ellen Lovell, presumably 42, was shot by Paul Heim a nineteen year old, after threatening Mrs Reisley with a pistol. Heim and the marshal restrained Lovell. later Lovell attempted to attack Heim with a brick prompting three shots. One bullet pierced her wrist but did not fatally wound her.
Alex Smith colored man found dead in a mud-puddle at St Peters in St. Charles Mo. The coroner's verdict says death by suffocation from drunkenness. He had served two terms in the state penitentiary and, seen Monday night, was very drunk and boisterous. Supposed to be about 20 when he fell and could not rise. no violence marked on his body.
Henry Ratliff, head sawyer at a saw mill near Montpelier, Indiana, died after a slab fell on the saw, striking him on the head and crushing his skull. He died within hours.
Sullivan Ind March 29 In Jefferson township the Schroeder family home burned while they were away. Fire crews responded but the structure was severely damaged with flames visible from the road. No injuries reported and cause under investigation.
A residence and the adjoining blacksmith shop were consumed by fire causing total losses estimated at $3,000. No insurance left the family destitute. Sullivan plans a new hotel project valued at $20,000.
A young girl in LaPorte Indiana was caught under a moving freight car while picking up coal on the track and was badly bruised. The engine had moved to switch cars and she did not see it in time to get clear.
Steamer Montana bound for St Louis collided with the Cincinnati packet Emma Graham in Beaver shoals near Rochester Pennsylvania. The Emma Graham sank in four feet of water though the cargo was saved.
