A severe April storm and prairie fires raged across several states. One town, North Platte, Nebraska, fought fires to save the city. Winds crippled farms in South Dakota and West Virginia reported extensive blazes. Multiple towns in Ohio, Kentucky, New York, and Virginia suffered property loss and missing residents amid hurricane force gusts.
A Louisville New Albany and Chicago train derailed near Rossville Indiana after a weakened bridge gave way. Engineer Brooks died trying to halt the train. fireman O'Brien was mortally wounded. Passengers escaped serious harm as cars stayed on the track. delay expected as officials assist the injured.
Lewis Lane, a county youth, confessed to authorities detailing a plan to kill the Olivers. He implicated four men now under arrest and said he with Will Holt and Alex Thomason fired on the Olivers. Lane claimed Henry is innocent and not part of the group. He cited fear of an innocent man’s hanging as motive and warned of possible lynching tonight.
Eleven year old Ella Fugate dies in Brazil Indiana after a 39 day meal refusal linked to grief for her brother who died six weeks earlier. The girl loses the ability to swallow and nears death while her parents grieve. meanwhile hotel owner R F McDonald leases the New Avelline hotel to J H Schlagal promising future improvements.
Four thousand union mechanics at the World's fair in Chicago refuse to work after an arbitration dispute with the Building Trades Council. Pickets block entrances, police keep order, and a conference is arranged with administration to seek settlement. In Omcaco the next day about 1,000 iron and architecture workers strike for eight to nine hour days with pay unchanged, with some employers promising concessions.
Carcavo April 11 report says nearly all workers resume same hours and pay after a strike at the world’s fair. Joint talks between administration and building trades council yield a concession of a minimum wage and permission to hire both union and non union workers for the exposition. arrests and unrest accompany the dispute over unionization.
In Hull the shipping federation seems poised to prevail as 400 more non union workers arrive to replace strikers. About 2,000 non unionists are at work on the docks while dragoons and police deter further assaults, and firms threaten to hire replacements if work does not resume.
President Grover Cleveland and Secretary Gresham visited Ambassador Thomas F. Bayard in Wilmington Delaware. They arrived by special rear car, greeted by thousands, and spent Sunday at Bayard's Delamere Place before returning to Washington. The return trip included a ceremonial bell journey across Pennsylvania and Midwest stops.
In Axpersos Indiana yesterday John Moriarity shot and killed Cal Streets after Streets had stoned Moriarity's house. Moriarity claimed mistaken identity and said Streets had done nothing to deserve the attack. Moriarity was arrested and jailed.
Sioux City April 10. A cattle rustling gang led by A N Snyder and Bowen fought a posse near the Bad Lands after a report by Moses. Moses and Sheriff Blakely were wounded. Snyder and Bowen escaped but safety is uncertain as a pursuit follows. The gang is believed to be broken up by the arrests.
Arrangements for moving the old Liberty bell from Parapetmia to Chicago are nearly complete. The special train will depart on the 25th instant and reach Chicago on the 20th, four days for the trip. Mayor Edwin S. Stewart and city officials will escort the relic along with invited guests on a train of Pullman sleepers and a dining car.
Information reaches Torexa Kansas that a negro who assaulted Mrs. Frost and killed her infant is captured near Salina and jailed. Thousands swarm the jail demanding his body with a sheriff’s posse blocking the crowd as lynching is feared tonight.
The incident occurred March 25 in Molendo during anti Masonic protests led by the Bishop of Arequipa. A mob attacked the Masonic lodge, burned the room and instruments, and wounded Emiliie D Casarec, the American consul in the leg. Police official responsible for protection was dismissed and to face trial.
Joe Berlin a major horse dealer with operations across western and southern states shot himself at his Arkansas home after a pistol misfire and a momentary delusion that enemies were coming for him. He had earlier business ties in Baltimore Memphis and Searcy and leaves a wife and three children.
The engagement is announced between Marian Phelps, daughter of the ex minister to Germany, and Dr Franz von Rothenburg, Germanys state secretary and former Bismarcks lieutenant. He is described as a popular Berlin figure aged forty. The Lakeside car line plans a route to the baseball park this week.
A severe storm near St Joe township caused a cyclone like depression, destroying Joseph Banet’s 80 by 140 barn worth 1500 dollars and injuring fruit trees and fences. Several windmills were toppled including one at the academy, with a frame house under construction blown off its foundation and other barns reported down nearby. No fatalities reported.
Thirty five ladies from Ossian three Presbyterian churches attended the annual Presbyterian Missionary society gathering in Ossian Indiana. Reports showed a prosperous year with over two thousand dollars raised. Speakers included Mrs Craven Indiana’s twenty year missionary and Miss Holmes who spoke on the Freedmen's cause. Local pastor and Ossian church members arranged generous hospitality for guests. Officers were elected with Mrs D W Moffat of Fort Wayne as president and several vice presidents and secretaries named. Next meeting slated for Bluffton. World’s fair Indiana exhibitors list released with about seventy in Forestry, wool, honey and machinery groups.
Reports from East Washington Street, Holton avenue and Pontiac street describe injuries from falls and accidents. Willie Bruns fractured his left collar bone after a sidewalk fall. Dr John J Ogle attended. Mrs Max Horning escaped serious harm in a buggy collision near south Calhoun Street. she suffered bruises and no fractures. Joseph Krechmann at Kerr Murray Foundry was struck on the head by a heavy belt and treated by Dr Duemling. Mrs Peter Perrigay continues to suffer rheumatism after an earlier ice accident on her broken arm.
Dr. Wishard reports four months of suspected illness in Mr. Blake. He details visits, observations, and family history showing insanity in Blake’s grandfather and uncle, plus a brother’s suicide, arguing Blake is insane. The note cites brain disease and urges continued observation.
An eighty one year old inmate Henry Bierstedt at the county poor farm attempted suicide Friday afternoon slashing his throat with a razor. He was found by a doctor who stitched the wounds but recovery is doubtful given age and condition.
The body of Patrick Mulligan was found in Yellow River near Plymouth Sunday morning after he leapt from a moving Pittsburg No 40 eastbound train. Mulligan, believed former Erie resident, was en route to that city when the fall occurred. A funeral procession followed to St Marys church and cemetery with Fruit House employees in attendance.
