Fight Over District Charity Bill Sparks A P A Foe
Washington April 10. Debate centered on the District of Columbia appropriation bill after sectarian charities were stripped from funding. Fitzgerald of Massachusetts led a fierce attack on the A P A while defending Catholic citizens and the right to fair American citizenship. He praised Roman Catholic figures and argued the A P A seeks to deny Catholics equal rights. The bill moves for a broad charity appropriation under the District commissioners with a nonsectarian proviso.
