A wartime home letter dated August 6 1918 from a mother to her son in askshon speaks of pride in his commission, wartime duties and democracy and pensive fear of the front. She recalls his father and promises steadfast love and to honor his bravery if he falls, hoping for his safe return.
Otto Nienter died at home in Forest Park on Tuesday morning August 6 after months of illness. Funeral Saturday August 10 at 2:80 o'clock with Brano Lederer and Circle Masonic lodge conducting at the grave. Born in Hanover Germany September 18 1809 he came to America as a young man and lived in Chicago before moving to Forest Park. Survived by wife Marta and son Carl and daughter Katha. Also included is a separate obituary note for Jonas A Johnson who died at Washington Hospital Chicago after an accident at the North Western railroad yard. He leaves a widow and four children. funeral and church services held in Austin with Forest Home cemetery interment.
A service flag will be raised Sunday afternoon at 280 o'clock in Forest Park between Motteon Street and Adanis Avenue. The Federal club residents arranged the display to honor thirteen local men from the block serving in the armed forces. The village council agreed to string the flag and affix the wire. Names honored include Walter Nouliver Leo Holt Rotgh Dihen Vorry Stuswey A Ascher Edward Son Thebes Walter Sanftlebon Walter Blomy Irvin Michalyky Vag Hingat Ernst Moshike Edward Tansch and Charlea Clunaven.
Mr and Mrs A Rooser and their niece Miss Andrey Behnefer depart Forest Park on August 4 for a month long western tour visiting Walla Walla Spokane Beattie Tacoma Portland and Yellowstone Park. They plan to return about September 8 with nights expected at Yellowstone.
Cook County launches Pershing Patriot Week from August 15 to 22 to boost War Savings Stamps sales. Chairman Lloyd D. Waddell leads the drive with Forest Park and county committees backing a pledge drive, enrollment, and a commemorative Pershing badge for buyers. Local precinct chairs and officials prepare events and speeches to mobilize residents in support of General John J. Pershing and the U.S. war effort.
Local amusement park employees organize a pre park windup event described as a banquet and ball with invitations extended to families and friends of the employee club. Also, local election results show new board president and members as candidates responded to a school vacancy.
Overseas mail brings Elmer Kalpplag’s note to his parents from the front listing his condition and hospital guard duty after gas exposure. Otto and Joby Hungama in France seek each other. John won three rolls from the front and sleeps in digouts. News from Mildred Powell and Elmer Sherman describes front-line impressions and fireworks at the wayside. Reports circulate of Radle Stange’s alleged wounding. Edward Santfleben reports good health and continuous shooting nearby. Frank Cortis and Philip Schemp enlistment noted. more names appear as the war progresses.
Twenty five friends escorted Earl Trimble to the La Balla street depot at 8:30 AM to bid him farewell. He returns from an eight day furlough at 2:00 AM Thursday August 2. A grand send off followed with thirty eight relatives and friends gathering at 88 Elgin avenue for celebrations, while Earl shares honors and unusual gifts. He plans to depart for duty in a few weeks from City Park Barracks New York, hoping to join Billie Marquard in the same ship and serve with the U S Navy Gun Crew.
At a Forest Park Business Men's meeting last Friday night the group urged a new lighting system for Madison Street. A committee including A. E. Winterroth J. Schwab and J. Paetz will confer with the council to increase street illumination to top of each ornamental cluster with a 100 watt lamp while keeping bottom lights unlit. The Madison alley between Burkhardt Court and Circle Avenue will be targeted for replacement with a floodlight borrowed from Ambrose Park.
A baby boy weighing ten pounds arrived Thursday evening August 8 at the Franzen home. The child, named Rooster, is described as a strong likeness of his father and is welcomed by the Community Club as the new mascot. The family shares in the joy and visitors’ congratulations.
Major Edward Bittel writes of life with the 180th Infantry in France. He and his men observe German bombing runs near a large city, aerial battles overhead, and shellfire close to their camp. He recounts crossing open ground under enemy fire and describes French towns, local life, and the weary routine of quartering with French families while awaiting orders.
Mrs Ellen Carney of 7802 Madison Street learns from her youngest son William that he is alive and well in Brance. The family suppresses news of two brothers deaths and seeks confirmation before informing him. Reports had circulated of enemy planes but no further details are given.
A telegraph to Mrs Keyward Stadelmeyer from 220 Rigin Avenue Forest Park confirms John Losin infantry was wounded in action July 18 in France. Letters from home reveal his courage and resolve, with personal notes about hospital trips and hope for recovery as his community longs for news.
