Grow Enough Corn On Three Acres

Three acres of corn can supply the normal yearly needs for a one horse farm in North Carolina. Prof. C. R. Hudson says a typical farm requires about 100 bushels for humans and livestock, with 60 for a horse or mule and 15 for a cow, plus meat and poultry needs. He notes that with 20 bushels per acre, five acres could be reduced to three by proper fertilization, moisture, and cultivation. Emphasizing plant food, especially nitrogen, adequate moisture, and good shallow cultivation, he warns against deep cultivation after growth begins and praises frequent, shallow passes to control weeds.

Leave Cotton Thick For Best Yields

P H Kime of the North Carolina Experiment Station advises farmers to plant cotton thickly with 6 to 7 inch hoes and 8 to 12 inch hill spacing on heavier soils. Chopping should begin when the second leaflets reach half to three quarters growth, avoiding cold weather. Early cultivation after chopping and use of weeder or cultivator reduce costs and prevent plants from falling down. thinning may still be needed even with a hill-dropper planter.
