Tragic accidental death of Tom Tate in Cliffside

Cliffside residents mourn the accidental shooting death of 36 year old Tom Tate in front of his Park Avenue East home Tuesday. Coroner and jury ruled accidental. Mrs. Alice McNeill Dead in West Jefferson

Mrs. Alice McNeill a West Jefferson resident died at her home after a long heart illness. She was 72 and survived by children including Mrs. Robert Pevall Belmont Idaho Mrs. A D Mills Forest City and P T McNeill among others. Burial planned in West Jefferson with family present in final days.

W M S District Meeting Thursday

About one hundred fifty delegates from the Marion district WoMan's Missionary Society met at Spindale Methodist church for an all day session. Mrs J F Jonas presided with Mrs H A Dunham delivering the main address. Rev J W Hoyle Jr led the noon devotional as plans for the year were discussed. The district covers Polk Rutherford McDowell and surrounding areas.

Mrs Avery McCurry dies after lingering illness at 89

Funeral services for Mrs Avery McCurry aged 89 were held at Golden Valley Methodist Church with Rev W L Cain officiating. She died Wednesday morning after a lingering illness and is survived by children Jasper Sim Charlie McCurry Mrs Mary Grayson and Mrs Jim Yelton. Burial followed at the church cemetery. Memorials and another service were noted for nearby churches with a large floral tribute.

Rutherfordton June 17 A new R C A Photophone has been installed by L D Miller in the Rex Theatre to furnish patrons with the latest in sound pictures. The first showing will be Friday evening when Happy Days a Fox all star film featuring twenty stars will be shown.

Motorcycle Trip from Spindale Heads Toward Chicago

Spindale reports Charles Duncan and Walter Gregg departed Monday on a motorcycle journey northward. They plan to visit Tennessee, Virginia, Kentucky, Illinois, then the western wheat fields. By Tuesday morning they had reached Bluefields West Virginia and were en route to Chicago.

City utility plants auctioned in Forest City Spindale Rutherfordton

Bids opened Tuesday afternoon for Forest City Spindale and Rutherfordton utilities. The Sherritt Company bid on all three towns with offers of 190000 to 210000 for Forest City and Spindale. The company proposes eight cents per kilowatt hour lighting with a ten percent discount for large amounts and aims to retain all existing staff. Proceeds would retire bonded debt totaling 2,115,000 across the three towns.

Sneak thieves shattered glass above a rear window Tuesday night and stole fifty dollars in cash and goods from the AQP store. The incident follows a prior entry months earlier, with officials noting petty thievery is rising in the city and urging arrests and convictions. Straw sun hats from Stahl's Ten Cent Stores are advertised for sale as part of local retail notices. Dairymen in Surry County begin delivering whole milk to Kraft Cheese at West Jefferson, with the first shipment recorded.

Rutherford county to hold second primary Saturday

A second primary will be held in Rutherford county Saturday July 5 to determine nominees for sheriff and county commissioners. J R Anderson of Rutherfordton, chairman of the county board of elections, announced filing closed. W C Hardin and H B Doggett filed for sheriff. H H Tucker and W G Harris filed for commissioner against the top three first primary finishers Blanton Jones and Deck. Simpson who was fourth refused to enter. Frank S Hall, runner up for clerk of court, will not run in a second race against M Oskerson.

County Club Meets Friday at First Baptist Church

The June meeting of the Rutherford County Club will convene Friday at one o clock in the banquet hall of First Baptist Church. Luncheon served by church ladies for fifty cents. Members and nonmembers are invited to attend with reservations due by Wednesday.

4-H Club Short Course Convenes In August

The annual 4-H club short course at State college will bring 800 to 1,000 youths from across the state during the week of August 4. Instruction covers farm crops, livestock, poultry, forestry, home economics, and canning. L. R. Harvill and Miss Elizabeth Cornelius lead, with college instructors and extension specialists guiding sessions. Chaperoned dormitories and a health contest finals with a king and queen of health are featured, plus dramatic performances and judging contests. Two hundred acres of corn and garden crops will feed 20 tenant families, grown by L. F. and Flint Klutz.
