Floresville and several nearby offices shift from second to third class on July 1 as part of a nationwide postal reclassification. The Floresville post office has operated as second class since 1923. Declining receipts and higher postage rates cited as contributing factors. LaVernia and Path offices move from third to fourth class in the changes.
Widespread reductions in class of Texas post offices were ordered by Postmaster General James A Farley to cut expenditures. The Floresville office and many others shift ratings from second to third or fourth class effective July 1, with salary cuts for local staff. A second notice restores the two cent local rate for first class postage from July 1 to boost business and prevent furloughs.
Fay C Canfield son of Mrs Lola Canfield of this city passed the Texas state bar examination in Austin and will open a law office here soon joining Dr J P Houston over First City National Bank He is a son of the late County Judge J E Canfield and a graduate of Floresville High School SMU and Southwestern University with two years at San Antonio Law School The Chronicle Journal wishes him success in his profession.
County Agent BE Beck Mrs Beck Miss Evelyn Spruce and Mr and Mrs Jess Dennis left Sunday for Chicago to attend the World's Fair with a vacation plan. They intended to visit Ozarks Arkansas en route and possibly return via New Orleans. They arranged for two new Chevrolet coaches at the exposition grounds in Chicago through Houston Chevrolet Company.
Wilson County applies for a public works appropriation to finance a new jail and courthouse. City officials weigh several project options while schools request financial aid for improvements and expansions as part of the county wide funding effort.
Wilson county leaders joined a Friday meeting in Karnes City to discuss the U S Government Public Works bill. Officials from Floresville and nearby areas sought aid for a new Wilson county courthouse and jail, roads, bridges, a sewer system, water tower, pool, and firehouse. The South Texas Chamber of Commerce said requests total about 17 million for the region.
Watermelons from Floresville totaled 112 carloads with a potential rise to 150 carloads. Growers realized about 17000 dollars as the market closed Thursday. Prices and shipments indicate steady demand and expansion prospects for the harvest.
Austin Texas June 21 The Texas Highway Department is prepared to start projects costing 15 million dollars with minimal delay once emergency Federal unemployment relief funds are available. Plans are ready and the main delay will be Federal approval and bidding. The commission awaits Federal Bureau of Public Roads regulations for the 25 million dollars apportioned to Texas and will select projects once received.
Mrs. J. L. Mitchell of San Antonio hosted a coconut luncheon on the St. Anthony roof to honor Miss Gertrude Murray on June 19, 1988. Seventeen attendees listed with varied surnames and the event featured zinnias and place cards reading June brides.
Floresville Chamber of Commerce brings Hon. J. E. McDonald, state commissioner of agriculture, to Floresville for an afternoon talk at the courthouse on Tuesday June 27 at 4 p m. The meeting targets farmers and business men to discuss the new cotton program.
Secretary of Agriculture outlines plan to reduce the cotton crop by destroying 10,000,000 acres of current crop. Campaign to spread quickly across cotton states. Planters urged to rent out cotton lands at six dollars per acre or higher.
Washington DC June 19 The Agriculture Department announced the payment schedule for individual cotton farmers who agree to plow under or abandon a portion of their cotton acreage as contracts are prepared and the program moves forward.
Washington June 19 Nearly half of Texas cotton acreage about 16 873 568 acres may be removed from production under a plan announced by Secretary Wallace. The effort targets about 196 county cotton committees in Texas with contracts to lease and retire portions of land. The program seeks farmer cooperation to plow up crop areas in return for rental payments and options on government held cotton, beginning August 1.
Dick Armstrong, a well known San Antonio boxing and wrestling figure, and matchmaker Tommy Veach, spent yesterday in the city finalizing plans for the big exhibition tomorrow night at John's Hall at 8 30. Six events are set with two wrestling matches and four boxing bouts promising action for the crowd.
