Drought and late cold weather slowed early season crops but rains revived stocks in Stockdale Texas the watermelon capital of Southwest Texas. The 12th annual Watermelon Jubilee runs Friday and Saturday June 24 25 with coronation of Queen Melone at Stockdale High School auditorium a parade of diversely grown melons and a rodeo and dance ending the celebration.

County Hospital Election Set For Saturday July 9
Wilson County Commissioners Court ordered the county hospital election to be held Saturday July 9 at 25 voting boxes. All voter lists will be checked and certified as legal tax paying voters for 1955. Final certification will be presented June 21. There were 681 signers to the petitions. 215 were prepared under the law. The tax return shows coprecipients and related figures. the law requires qualified tax paying voters to sign. The county hospital proposal envisions a six member board overseeing a roughly 20 bed facility with modern labs X-ray and operating rooms. Tax rate seven cents per $100 valuation. annual costs scale from about 75 cents to $7.50 depending on property value.
