Protest of T N O Rail Abandonment 74 Miles San Antonio Cuero

Wilson County officials and area chambers join San Antonio and Cuero in opposing the Texas and New Orleans Railroad Company plan to abandon 74.4 miles of the Cuero Subdivision from San Antonio to near Salado Junction. A hearing request targets Nixon for proceedings with the Interstate Commerce Commission, with local leaders pressing public convenience and necessity. Local officials from Wilson County and city representatives of Stockdale La Vernia and others attended and filed protest documents.

Democrats Invite Wilson County in San Antonio Meet with Butler

All Wilson County Democrats are invited to a Sunday 6:45 meeting in the North Terrace Room at the Gunter Hotel San Antonio to meet Hon. Paul Butler chairman of the Democratic National Committee. Butler is touring Texas and will hold brief talks with local members and their families during a short visit this week.

Stockdale Melons Await Watermelon Jubilee This June

Drought and late cold weather slowed early season crops but rains revived stocks in Stockdale Texas the watermelon capital of Southwest Texas. The 12th annual Watermelon Jubilee runs Friday and Saturday June 24 25 with coronation of Queen Melone at Stockdale High School auditorium a parade of diversely grown melons and a rodeo and dance ending the celebration.

Valley Gins First Bale Of 1955 Cotton

The nation’s first bale of 1955 cotton was picked and ginned today in Edinburg and shipped toward Maine for auction. The bale, produced by local farmers, is expected to bring about $4,500 at sale, signaling a brisk start to the cotton season.

Sacred Heart Educational Building Dedication in Floresville

The Sacred Heart Church in Floresville dedicates its new Parish Educational Building on Sunday June 26 at 4 30 pm. Grounds open at 2 pm with amusements and a barbecue supper starting at 4 30 pm. Adults pay 1 00 and children 50 cents for the barbecue plates. A full description and photo will appear next week.

Commissioners Vote to Buy New Wilson County Bookmobile

Wilson County Commissioners Court voted in regular session to order a conventional 1,200 volume bookmobile for the Wilson County Library. The vehicle will visit Stockdale, La Vernia, Poth, Kosciusko and local schools twice monthly, serving about 15,000 people. Public subscription raised $1,069.83 so far, with additional donations pledged as construction time allows, aiming for fall delivery before the new school year begins.

Three Auto Accidents Here The Past Week

Three auto accidents occurred in this community over the past week with no serious injuries. A Saturday afternoon crash near a bridge involved Mrs Hiey Garza and the Montoya boy, both cars demolished. Mrs Garza and her daughter taken to hospital. A Sunday midnight collision near Sewell Schultz’s home on Highway 181 between a car driven by Mrs Hughes and another by Mrs Guides left occupants bruised but not seriously injured and both vehicles damaged. Monday noon a gasoline truck hit a southbound freight train at a crossing below Brie opened home. driver uninjured but shaken after attempting to stop.

Peanut Farmers Urged to Plant Full Allotments

Brite of Pleaston reports from the Southeastern Peanut Shellers Association meeting in Atlanta that peanut crops are well planted with little seed shortage. He urges farmers in Wilson and Atascosa counties to plant all their allotments, noting drought pressures and demand for more acreage. Officials from the Fats and Oils Division of ISDA attended.

County Hospital Election Set For Saturday July 9

Wilson County Commissioners Court ordered the county hospital election to be held Saturday July 9 at 25 voting boxes. All voter lists will be checked and certified as legal tax paying voters for 1955. Final certification will be presented June 21. There were 681 signers to the petitions. 215 were prepared under the law. The tax return shows coprecipients and related figures. the law requires qualified tax paying voters to sign. The county hospital proposal envisions a six member board overseeing a roughly 20 bed facility with modern labs X-ray and operating rooms. Tax rate seven cents per $100 valuation. annual costs scale from about 75 cents to $7.50 depending on property value.

Quintanillas In Wreck In San Antonio Trek

A collision near the Sears South Side Store in San Antonio involved Quintanillas and family from Floresville. One person in another car broke a leg. three cars were involved. Editors Sam Fore Jr and Mrs Fore spent a weekend in Galveston attending the Texas Press Association convention, with a Past Presidents breakfast and a tea with Mrs. Ross Frick. County Judge Merrill Comme was in Austin on official business.
