Flora residents may see a tax levy increase in 1906 to boost school funding. The Flora school board has long relied on county funds and faced teacher shortages due to underfunding. A proposed 30 cent tax per hundred dollars could add about 1500 dollars annually, with potential state aid filling any remaining gap while keeping overall levy unchanged.
The state board of paroles and pardons has considered Samuel Michaels operation in Howard county. The aged man was sentenced to Michigan City prison for one to fourteen years for destroying Aaron Shock’s home near Burlington. The case will be reviewed again at the June meeting. D A Coulter will consult Burlington neighbors to gauge their wishes. If no serious objections arise he is likely to be released to his family in June.
A Tuesday evening Christian Endeavor social at R. D. Voorhees residence drew strong interest with a varied program. Music, both vocal and instrumental, highlighted the event as guests enjoyed ice cream, cake, and coffee. Wave Hinkle won first prize in the Cat Story contest and Grace Martin won the Stamp Act prize.
A short note by Jake Barnard mentions a pasture capable of housing either 25 or 80 head of horses and cattle. It also references Jake Smith, a photographer, who can remove crusty wrinkles if accused of being a pie face.
The Silver Medal Oratorical Contest at the M. E. church proved a success though attendance fell short of expectations. Contestants Maggie Brim Lola Rickard Bessie Hanna Gladys Umberhocker Mary Lewis and Edyth Ferguson performed well with Bessie Hanna earning the medal. Music by the Juanita Glee Club complemented the event and another contest is planned in about three weeks.
Daniel K. Garrison died at his Flora home last Sunday from dropsy. Born in the township 54 years ago, he spent his life among neighbors and friends. He married Alice Hamilton in 1875, who survives with children Myrtle Spurgeon Harley Charles and Homer. A brother, Wm. Garrison of Bringhurst, and sisters Mrs O S Beggs of Camden and Mrs Emanuel Fife of Mosswesttown survive. Funeral services were held at Flora M E church Tuesday, Rev. Hickman officiating, with interment in Moss cemetery.
Dr. J. N. Hurty told the Indianapolis Commercial club that Indiana has about 6,000 doctors earning an average of 1,000 dollars yearly, totaling 6 million dollars spent on cures annually. He warned that less than a quarter of a million dollars is spent on disease prevention, despite the old saying that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
At a stockholders and directors meeting in Indianapolis President Fred Soule reported and stockholders from Young America Kirklin Russiaville Sheridan and other towns along the line said they still have faith in the new line and believe it will be built.
Delphi reports 565 school children enrolled, about 100 more than Flora’s count. The larger total underscores Delphi's growing student population and reflects ongoing enrollment trends in the district. Flora’s tally sits around 465, illustrating differing local counts within nearby communities.
The first free open air street concert in Flora will be given next Thursday evening and weekly thereafter. The band, supported by local business and professional men, has grown larger and better and promises a hit with a wide repertoire. Opening May 18 draws a large crowd. Director Dr. A A Metsker leads with a strong program including The Rambler Indiana Folks Inspiration Waltzes Wedding Feast Salute to the Stars and Stripes Asenath York City Post Uncle Sammy Moon Winks.
Phil Wolverton a well known horseman in the county died in Lafayette on Sunday at age 53 leaving four children. Once among White county’s wealthiest men he faded to comparative poverty by his death. The funeral was held Wednesday at his brother George Wolverton’s home near Chalmers.
Broadrick Brothers of Kokomo rent the former Farmers Bank room and plan a new bakery in a few days promising high quality. The Progressive Brethren church Market at Big 4 Grocery is set for next Saturday. Loren Chittick, who had appendectomy last Thursday, is recovering well and out of danger. his poet friends will be glad to hear it.
The Indiana case question if town clerks retain court powers under the 1901 cities and towns law. A circuit court ruled the old right to hold court was not repealed by the new act, and the matter may escalate to higher courts for a final interpretation.
Township assessors must finish by May 15 and may have until May 18 to turn over books. County assessor and auditor will then take over. Board of review meets the first Monday in June to assess corporations and adjust county assessments.

The burned site will be rebuilt with brick. carpenters began lumber yard work. Mrs. C. O. Shaffer spent Thursday with A. A. Shaffer. Edna Cokayne, attends business college in Indianapolis, visited over the weekend and returned Monday.
Rural Radnor notes report progress on a gravel road despite bad weather. Rev Downey and daughter Mabel visited. May Blair visited Ruth Jett. Temperance Union to hold a medal contest at M E church on Saturday May 20. Mrs Franklin went to Logan. Monday sport with Bert Horner. Birthday surprise for Mrs Mary Cox with band music and gifts. Downey preached at M E Church. Miss Jett called to Forest for her ill sister. she attended the Delphi show Thursday.
Delphi High School alumni met Friday night in the Delphi public school building to elect officers for next year. Will Davis was chosen president with Mrs J J Shultz as vice president, Mrs Myron Ives as secretary, and John Mount as treasurer.
University officials announce an active campaign to raise 250000 for an endowment with a 50000 gift from Mr. Carnegie. Rev. S B Towne becomes field secretary to head the drive while President Hughes is named as a trustee of the Carnegie fund for retired professors.
The Flora town board did not grant the franchise for the Indianapolis and Chicago Air Line Traction company at Tuesday’s meeting. They will reconsider next Monday. The 99 year term was cut to 25 years and rights limited to Willow Street. Construction must begin in Flora within a year and finish in 17 months. City Attorney Gamble handles the case. The board seeks fair provisions and will act if acceptable.
The first annual commencement was held Friday at the Baptist church for Young America High School. Five graduates received diplomas from Principal A. K. Bond. Rev. Virgil W. Tevis delivered the address. Music by Steinhart's Orchestra of Logansport complemented the evening, with a good attendance. Graduates: Joseph Cripe, Will Dilliplain, Hazel Todhunter, Maude Kahl, Marie Gard.
Wool dealers pay 26 cents per pound, the highest in nearly twenty years, with 1893 fleece price at 13 cents and last year at 23 cents. A 12 pound boy was born to Mr and Mrs Harry Dillon on the McCain farm near Carrollton bridge on Monday.
