Pioneer tragedy and fortitude in early Iowa settlement
A long recounting of 18th century Fayette County events tells how Peter and Polly, early settlers, faced a violent 1542 attack by indigenous raiders who killed Tegarden and Atwood, wounded children, burned the Tegarden cabin, and prompted a fragile white withdrawal. Survivors found aid from Battie, O'Rear, and Wilcox families as settlers regrouped, soldiers later captured the attackers, and the community slowly rebuilt near Fayette County's origin sites.
