Friends in Falls City celebrate Edna Wentworth for rapid progress as a soprano with the Wentworth Concert Company under Metropolitan Lyceum Bureau Kansas City. Her local fans hope her tour returns her to sing again in Falls City.
Mrs. Polly Dutton reported a horse stolen from her farm between Highland and White Cloud. The suspect, Collins, confessed after identification by Dutton. he caused a barn fire while drunk, burning a horse and injuring another, with hay and grain losses. Collins was taken to Troy, Kansas for trial.
Several local items including obituaries with ages, millinery apprenticeship, real estate for sale, and community events. Port Rico charity lunch at Mrs Sam Marts, Women’s clubs events in Humboldt Falls City and Barada, and Sorosis club meeting with art papers and refreshments.
Last Sunday Jim Pelham and Miss Ollie Morton suffered serious injuries when a team ran away as Pelham attempted to mount the buggy. Pelham sustained an injured arm and facial wounds while Morton, thrown from the buggy, broke a hip and endured other severe injuries. Doctor Green attended them, with Morton likely bedbound for some time. In Salem on Monday Albertson was severely hurt by a fever blow to the chin, nearly severing a jugular vein.
W. W. Abbey was grazed by an empty beer keg tossed from a roof while he swept his back porch. Police checked Wahl and Reavis & Abbey buildings but found no one. Authorities suspect upstairs celebrants may have thrown the keg without warning, narrowly avoiding a fatal head injury.
Relatives here learned last Thursday of the death of Mrs Harriett Catron at her son Eli Catron’s home in Mullen Nebraska She was 80 years old and had lived in this city in its early days with her husband and family before moving to Mullen about twenty years ago She is survived by a sister Mrs Margaret Maddox and many other friends and relatives here.
At the Nedrow home on March 19 1908 Francis Smith wed Elizabeth Nedrow with Mamie Fisher playing the wedding march. A large dinner followed and a list of presents included silverware clocks bedspreads and a dinner set among others. A later collision on Stone street between two buggies caused damage but no injuries.
Sunday morning near Rulo Thomas Mooney, deceased at his parents residence west of Nula, reportedly died from an accidental gun discharge. He was unmarried and the funeral was held at the Catholic church with burial in the Catholic cemetery.
Chief Beasley saw four Hiawatha residents, three colored men and one white man, playing craps near the depot Sunday. The nonwhite players paid fines, while the white man was required to perform city labor as punishment.
Another smallpox case developed in this city on Wednesday in the home of Ted McKeiver. The victim is their young daughter, believed to have contracted the disease during a visit in Rule where several cases are reported. The illness is described as light, with no fears for an adverse outcome.
A deal transfers the city Journal to Mr. Harris from Council Bluffs. The Tribune welcomes the new editor and expects him to succeed. John Martin plans to move to Council Bluffs and locate there at month’s start.
Rev Manshardt returning from Holton Kansas Evangelical conference will take charge of the Leonardsville church next Monday. He has served Falls City four years and is deeply loved by his congregation and many townsfolk. Rev P Shuman succeeds him here while Rev Nanninga remains east of the city with the Holton conference.
The Leo Cider and Vinegar Co plans a pickle department this summer by buying all cucumbers brought in. State Bank issues cucumber growing and selling instructions and seeds for selected varieties. The factory aims to expand and may add two new cider presses to handle the apple crop this fall.

John Ross improving after illness. Out of town folks attend Elks minstrels. Max Werner now Lyric ticket seller and pianist. Mrs Lawrence is in critical condition. Lost gold pin with bulldog head and chipped diamond eyes. Pearl Lawrence must close her school near Arago. Pattman Sisters Millinery adds new spring goods. Great Western Clothing posts new spring lines. M Self and family move to Burchard property. Club women travel to Humboldt federation meeting. Mr Jacobs of Great Western Sales Co. in KC buying for local store. Harvey Wahl claims 23 ducks. unconfirmed. Candy Kitchen offers delicious ice cream and urges repeat customers. Deputy assessors meet County Assessor Judd to finalize schedules. Bishop Arthur L Williams to visit St Thomas Church with sermon. B P O Ellis hosts initiation of S S L Redwood and M L Noble in lively session.
