Leo Rogers, wanted for robbing a saloon in Grand Island, hid in a depot building. Police from Lincoln and Grand Island arrived as train No. 44 brought him in, and Sheriff Fenton held him before transport back to Grand Island.
Rev R Cooper Bailey PhD will lecture at the Presbyterian church on Feb 4 promising an instructive talk. Bailey spent five years among Utah Mormons and will discuss pledge making and breaking with unique insight. C E's sponsor the event and expect a large attendance. Admission 15 cents.
A county treasurer requests the Tribune publish his correction to a claim that county officers are allowed deputies based on 20 000 inhabitants. He cites Nebras ka statutes, notes salary figures for treasurers and deputies, and asks for publication of his response and the reply in the next issue. Also mentions cash found on desk at Falls City State Bank with owner to prove property and redeem notice.
The library received an author’s copy of David P Abbott’s Behind-the Scenes With the Mediums. Abbott, a Falls City native now famed worldwide, has attracted letters from scientists and others. The book, now in its third edition, will be ready for circulation Saturday.
A resident letter to the editor asks why the city’s cash balance and tax levels have changed, demands a fiscal report and comparative electric lighting costs, and urges the administration to provide answers and improvements. Mention of Steve Miles and wife planning a trip to Los Angeles appears as a closing note.
Last Sunday Louie Lacher skated on Pony creek despite warnings of unsafe ice. The ice broke and he fell in, but bystanders pulled him out after a cold immersion. He says he will heed warnings next time.
Society notes report St Agnes Guild’s regular session with Miss Helen Burchard on Monday evening and a Leap year party hosted by Claire Van Deusen. Episcopal church women plan Lincoln birthday program at Major Keeling’s residence, and Henry Ruegre and wife hosted a family dinner for Will and Mrs Tanner of Arapaho. The Christian church Mending Society met Thursday with Mrs Carrie Paston as the group repaired garments and buttons.
The notice warns against evading postage with misuse of high and low class mail, fines of 310 per offense, and reports from St. Louis on tobacco tag shipments. It urges rural patrons to keep stamps ready and to use small cups in boxes to hold costs when buying stamps.
On complaint by John Morris three Preston young men appeared before Judge Spingins on a gambling charge. F Reavis represented the area but no substantial evidence was found, so the case was dismissed and the youths discharged. It is easy to arrest for gambling but hard to prove it.
The Elks lodge plans a smoker at the National hotel on Friday evening February 14. Arthur Wakely of Omaha Mat Gehring of Plattsmouth and Ewing Herbert of Hiawatha will respond to toasts Frank Reavis acts as toastmaster with a top tier wind jam. Mr Spence will oversee a lavish supper. Invited guests are assured an evening seldom seen in a city of this size.
A large Falls City audience welcomed Cameron and Daisy King with a lively show. The chorus, dancing, costumes, and scenery impressed, while two comedians kept the crowd engaged. Manager Sterbert Werr earns congratulations for assembling such a strong troupe.
The district court convened Monday morning with Judge Pemberton presiding. Byron Clark of Plattsmouth represents the Burlington in the railroad case, succeeding the late J W Deweese. Early reports show a favorable verdict for the railroad in the Pribbeno water case. several divorce actions were heard with mostly unhappy outcomes. The court also hears Stewart v Tichen.
Infant Kimina Preeda Brecht daughter of Adolf and Louisa Brecht was born January 20 1880 in Karlsrenhi Germany and died January 23 1908 in Malta City Nebraska after an operation to treat acute appendicitis. She came to America in 1906 with her uncle Jacob Mack and lived with the Gist family. She leaves Adolf Mack and Max Gruber as survivors. Her short life is remembered with homesickness for Germany and a hope for a better homeland.
The Ladies Kensington of the First Presbyterian Church hosted a banquet at Kika Lodge to launch a new church building project. City leaders spoke on the church past present and future while music and a toast program highlighted community support and need for a larger facility. The current building is too small for attendance and hampers Sunday school growth, prompting public praise for generosity.
Richardson County ranks second in Normal attendance with forty one students. Frank A. Boose of Peru Normal mourns his brother’s death. Peru friends offer sympathy. Philo Mathean Society concert features Edward Hodapp, Loeb, and Owl Quartet. Peru Normal and Humboldt High play Boys Basketball. Peru wins 40 to 2. Local officials Benyston and Voeglein praised. Falls City High School paper commended by Peru. O W James of Humboldt trains senior basketball teams. Glenn D Jenkins appointed assistant to Prof Lrownell in chemistry and humanities labs. Vref Brownness praised as capable educator.
A wagon team from Heacock and Son started from its own grounds yesterday morning when the tongue dropped. The team bolted and collided with a hitch rack beside the old Goldner blacksmith shop. Both horses fell but no serious injuries occurred.
On Friday exst High School basketball teams traveled to Pawnee City for return games. The girls won 20 to 3 and the boys 31 to 20. They report an excellent time and praise the treatment by their opponents.
Last Thursday while working in his cellar, Dr. MceMia stepped off a nail, nearly running through his foot. The injury was very painful and confined him to bed briefly, but he is now recovering and able to resume duties at the drug store.
A man, after drinking, sped his horse beyond legal limits and was brought to police court. He paid a fine of $1 plus costs for the offense in a brief hearing.
