Fairfield Iowa plans a busy summer with sewer work paving a new hospital a $60 000 high school building a $25 000 passenger station and multiple disposal and filtration plants. construction on the filtration plant begins with equipment stored in Chicago awaiting site delivery and a May to June start for sewers and school work.
Keokuk Iowa May 7 track meet saw Fairfield Illinois place fourth overall amid evenly contested events. Zeigler of Fairfield starred in the mile, Heineman dominated a last furlong sprint, while Pittsfield and Springfield relay teams showed strong late speed.
A Daily News summary notes A N Chamberlain and C H Williams visited Loback Consolidated and Fruitvale schools near Grand Junction. They praised Principal E E Cole and Principal Robert Ross, lauded modern teaching, strong class structures, and C G Sargent County Superintendent for high standards, predicting future leaders from these schools.
Charles Russell age six son of Mr and Mrs Bruce Russell was running barefoot to school when two boys with a freshly sharpened lawn mower collided with him. He suffered a deep cut on the heel and leg requiring five stitches. He is resting as well as could be expected.
Des Moines reports tally 477 Clark delegates and 308 Wilson among Iowa Democratic delegates chosen by 94 of 99 counties for the Burlington convention May 16. About 68 delegates remain unchosen. total delegates 1,032 with 531 needed to instruct. Clark aims to instruct all 26 Iowa votes for Champ Clark at Baltimore.
Mrs. J. W. Messick, aged over sixty, says a man entered her home near midnight Sunday and assaulted her while threatening her if she cried out. Officials found no signs of a break in or violence on her, and no corroborating evidence against a named prominent Black man. The case remains a puzzle for investigators.
Hon W S Kenyon and Lafe Young are touring the state separately. Both have appeared in the past week. Lafe seeks the senator job, while Kenyon resists. Kenyon’s Armory address drew a fine audience and impressed as an appealing speaker.
Maryland primaries give Theodore Roosevelt 66 delegates and Champ Clark 72 with Wilson 44 in incomplete counts. Clark carries Baltimore and surrounding counties, while Harmony’s nine votes cannot change totals. Both Roosevelt and Clark win a solid sixteen delegates to Chicago, with party factions eyeing unity at the national conventions.
Last Thursday evening at the Library Hall a lecture by Mr. Geo Delmage on Medical Freedom drew a large audience. He warned against medical oligarchy, urged education over compulsion, and opposed the Owen bill for a National Health Bureau while defending patient equality and medical freedom.
Fred Bowermaster and Nellie Lamansky were married Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock by Rev. H. J. Hogan at St Marys rectory. Attendants were Charles Bowermaster and Caroline Webber. The couple will live in Fairfield and begin housekeeping in the groom's ready cottage.
At Fairfield's new airdome next week the Harvey Stock Co presents plays such as Down East Ishmael and Lena Rivers. Monday night shows The Whirlpool, a soci ety comedy drama with pathos and humor. Specialties between acts and new scenery. Prices 10 20 30 cents. Grand opening Monday May 13.
After denying a motion for a new trial Judge F C Platt in Black Hawk district court sentenced J T McCraskell to not more than eight years in Fort Madison penitentiary for the killing of Henry Phillips a wealthy Iowa farmer last November. McCraskell’s counsel filed a motion for a new trial and his brothers posted a $6000 appeal bond. McCraskell a sewing machine agent was convicted of the homicide.
Frederick Dunn of Davenport aged thirteen loses his left foot when a Rock Island switch engine strikes him as he crosses in front of a moving train on May 6 in Davenport Iowa. He is the son of Robert N. Dunn.
To Republican voters of Jefferson County, I will be a candidate for the Republican nomination for coroner, subject to your decision at the June primary. Dr. C. C. Tallman.
Township officers must file affidavits by May 19 to appear on the primary ballot. S A Power was chosen as a lay delegate to the General Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church and left last week for Minneapolis Minnesota where the conference will be held during the month.
