Ft. Dodge Iowa March 23 Every male aged 25 to 45 in the city would be required to marry if an ordinance from Mayor Bennett becomes law. The ordinance imposes fines for noncompliance and calls on all able bodied, unwed persons to obtain licenses and wed. The mayor offered to perform ceremonies free of charge, citing past weddings and urging police officers to marry, with one promising to wed by June.
Des Moines insurer adjuster C P Beezley of Capital Insurance was severely beaten by editor A R Barnes after a quarrel over fire loss settlement in Albia Iowa. Beezley, who sustained a black eye a broken ear and head injuries from a chair strike, plans to file information charging Barnes with attempted murder following the early morning blaze that forced two families to flee.
Marshalltown Iowa March 23 three disgruntled members of the soldiers home attempted to claim a color line at the old men building at breakfast. Capt Nicholas Swenson denied any line and said no change in tables or quarters was planned. Three colored residents Howard Stevens and Luckade refused meals and one man was discharged years ago for false statements about the chaplain.
A jury has been secured in State vs. John Webster. The Harvard professor stands accused of cutting a creditor to pieces and faces trial in full swing. Jury members Cahill, Clement, Welch, Randall, Bridgens, Warner, Ellwood, Glass, Buresh, Van Houten, Reden, Keane, and White are seated. About eighty witnesses were subpoenaed, but not all may testify.
In Struble near Le Mars five smallpox cases were left untreated with no quarantine. Five weeks after William John first fell ill the disease spread, despite examination by Dr Mosehr who called it a light form. The town has no health officer and the council has taken no action.
Tipton Iowa March 23 W A Moffit has just concluded the purchase of the Krone farm from the estate for 27701 dollars. It was one of the largest deals in this part of the state for some time. Moffit will make his home on the place and says land in Cedar county will soon be worth 150 dollars per acre.
A Iowa City public address closing a seminary of Iowa’s constitution argues state pride and unity, urging a patriotism rooted in history, institutions, and Western hospitality.
