Business first then farms, Baer urges for balance
Carl J. Baer of the St. Louis Chamber of Commerce tells the Mississippi Valley conference that to temper the wheel of progress business must forget the city and build up the country. He cites farm production as 70 percent of world business and urges improving farm wages and education to raise overall production. He notes high living costs stem from inefficiency, over-handling, shorter hours without proportional output, and city life drawing raw materials away. He calls for barefoot boys on the farm to have equal opportunities with city youth.
