Mt. Sterling Iowa March 17 Sam Carr a farmer nine miles east of town drank heavily and assaulted his wife then fired at her before burning the house and outbuildings with oil and other inflammables. He stood against approaching neighbors and shot himself, dying instantly. His wife survived.
Des Moines IIa March 17 An altercation in the courthouse sees Jailer Patrick Madden strike County Attorney Jesse Miller after a newspaper accusation of dishonesty. Bailiff John Shannon and Attorney Herbert Wright intervene as deputies restore order. Madden vows further action.
Fort Madison reports Mrs. Chas. O Long追her husband across states from Denver to Fort Madison after he kidnapped their five month old son. The couple had divorced in Denver five years earlier. Long was arrested on kidnapping but released after agreeing to return the child to the mother.
A good roads train will travel the Northwestern lines this spring starting at Onawa on April 10. Henry Walace and R H Aishton lead the project visiting towns with worst roads for two lectures daily one in the forenoon and one in the afternoon. Speaker D Ward King of Maitland Missouri, a practical farmer, will discuss road making.
At Mt Pleasant Louisiana on March 17 officials report the March election approved a two mill tax to build a kindergarten room at the Winona school. The proposal was not published beforehand and a petition is circulating for a special election to legitimize the vote. The town section shows clear need for the addition.
Des Moines reports a $5,000 gift from R Z McCoy to Drake University with use to be decided by trustees. Salaries for Liberal Arts instructors rise across the board starting with President Bell. Twenty scholarships are planned for the College of Medicine while arrangements are made for candidate selection. President Sawyer plans to join the medical department after Johns Hopkins.
In Marengo Judge Byington's district court rules Sinclair Tea and Coffee Co of Marshalltown is not a transient merchant under Iowa law. The ruling limits the statute to travelers selling their own goods, not steady outside solicitors. Separately, Creston judge H K Evans sentences Pearl James to penitentiary for two and a half years for forgery. He passed a check on Creston Savings Bank claiming it was from Latimer Wilson in exchange for a horse. He was arrested before a westbound train departure.
Des Moines March 17 Congressman Hull chairing the military panel says he was misquoted in eastern papers. He did not say Japan seeks the Philippines but urged a strong navy to safeguard island possessions and suggested future possibilities. He added he never mentioned purchasing the islands.
Robert Henderson, managing editor of the Council Bluffs Nonpareil, married Miss Myrtle Long of Philadelphia after a romance sparked by sign language study in Council Bluffs. Henderson, now deaf, and Long met at the Iowa school for the deaf. the couple plan visits to Washington and Niagara Falls before returning to Iowa.
In Nevada Iowa March 17, women helped approve a consolidation plan for Richland township schools by a 36 to 3 vote among 39 ballots, triggering a $4000 bond for a new building. Opponents threaten court action while non resident landowners and farmers discuss potential litigation.
Newton Iowa March 17. Millard Buck convicted of first degree murder in the killing of William Porter of Prairie City has been declared insane and moved to the insane ward at Anamosa. Buck killed Porter in a quarrel over a woman they both had been paying attention to.
Des Moines reports that Iowa railroads will offer one fare for the round trip to the state G A R encampment at Oskaloosa from May 16 to 18. The reduced rate applies across the state except where the normal fare to Oskaloosa is $1 or less, where the rate becomes one and one third for the round trip.
