Panic swept a crowded Catholic cathedral in Chihuahua on June 1 as a candle fell and sparked a fire on an altar. Many women and children were injured or killed as the crowd surged to escape the blaze.
Major Ben Perley Poore died at 12 30 this morning at the Ebbitt house Washington after a decline from Brights disease. Born November 2 1820 in Newburyport he served as secretary of legation in Brussels edited the American Sentinel and contributed to the Congressional Record. He was long connected with the Boston Journal and Massachusetts militia history scholar with a vast archive at Indiana Hill. Mrs Poore survives him.
Late tonight a dynamite attack was aimed at the Pittsburg and Connellsville Coal company shaft buildings at Davidson station near Connellsville. A group fired on four workers as they fled after the blast failed to damage the mine. The assault follows heightened tensions among striking cokers.
