German immigrant dies by suicide near Detar Iowa
John Zehlke a 29 year old German was found dead under a willow hedge three miles south of Detar Iowa with a bullet wound to the head and a revolver by his side. A passbook note in German blames Annie Carstens for the tragedy and asks forgiveness. Zehlke had visited Annie Carstens in DeWitt the previous Saturday and appeared despondent on return. His family searched for him after he failed to return that evening.

A June cloud burst in northern Ohio flooded streets and cellars, damaged two lumber yards and a railroad line washing away 300 feet of Lake Shore track stopping a passenger train.
