Two blocks of adjacent tenements burned. at least dozens of lives feared lost as flames spread and police and firemen suffered heat. Cincinnati stables near Brighton House also burned with substantial but smaller losses, many horses saved and total loss estimated at up to two hundred thousand dollars.
Reports from Knoxville and OskaLoosa detail the murders of John Fall and his wife on separate farms last night. Both homes were burned, with Mrs Fall found near the ruins and Mr Fall inside the blaze. Robbery suspected. a man named Hite, once committed to an asylum by Fall, is believed responsible by locals but is at large.
The coke syndicate weighs bringing in new workers with protection for native Americans preferred over Hungarians, claiming Hungarians have been troublesome. The strike has halted iron ore shipments from Cleveland and Ashtabula.
In Thornton New Jersey on May 25 the British Hosiery Company posted a notice warning that the workforce may be reduced by half or the plant shut down. The plant, imported from England in 1884 to exploit tariff protection, has many workers worried about savings and retirement with families to support.
