Marilla Sallaby Carter, born August 18 1850 in Des Moines County Iowa, died February 13 1900 at 702 West Kirkwood Fairfield aged 57 years 5 months and 25 days. She married Matthew Carter in 1871 and joined First English Evangelical Lutheran Church May 15 1907. Survived by husband Matthew Carter and children Corinne and Lloyd Carter of Fairfield and others in South Dakota Kansas and North Dakota. Ida May Carter had died years earlier.

Maniac on Train Wounds Passenger in Des Moines
A maniac wielding a large knife on a Great Western train in Des Moines wounded Ernest Richards, a fellow passenger, in a frantic attack. Richards was taken to Mercy hospital as bystanders and trainmen subdued the assailant, Martin Overman, who had just been discharged from a Chicago hospital and was en route to Kansas City.

Man Kills Wife Then Shoots Self After Marital Discord
Waterloo reports Frank Thompson 34 shot his wife Edith Truman after she left him following a year of marriage. He fired a fatal chest shot on the porch, then killed himself behind a nearby tree. Edith, said to have been ill treated, had been taken to Colorado earlier. Thompson followed to Waverly and confronted her at the door. A bottle of carbolic acid was found on him.
