The jury finds the deceased died after being struck by a local freight train engine at the Grimes Street crossing in Fairfield Iowa on December 14 1918 at about 5 50 p m The engine and crew were switching in Rock Island yard without rear lights and were backing north toward the crossing while a 57 car freight train moved south on the main track

Richard Collins eleven year old son of Mr and Mrs Dennis Collins of this city was killed Saturday when struck by an engine at West Grimes street crossing. An inquest found the verdict that he was struck an end lightless switching engine after a freight train passed. The boy delivered papers for the Ottumwa Courier and was a favored local student and worker. Funeral services were held at the home and he was buried in Evergreen cemetery with family pallbearers. Charles H Schwepps reports on the Fifth Liberty Loan noting hoped for strong public support, bond terms, and continued Liberty Loan organization in the Seventh district to fund war debts and troop repatriation. He cites past success and urges oversubscription.

Third Iowa Formed 168th Infantry in World War I History
Based on State Historical Society records the regiment began as the Third Regiment Iowa National Guard in 1892 and evolved through the Fifty first and Fifty-fifth Iowa Infantry. It served on the Mexican border in 1916 and mobilized as the 168th Infantry on August 15 1917 at Camp Dodge. It shipped to Camp Mills September 1917 and joined the Rainbow Division bound for France.
