Baby Smothered by Cat In Brooklyn Home

New York December 8 Mrs James Saunders of 176 Schloss Street Williamsburg awoke to find a large black cat asleep on her nine week old son Augustus. She drove the cat out but it sprang at her. After chasing it the cat yielded, the child’s hands and face were cold and a doctor said the infant had been dead about four hours. Authorities believe the cat’s weight on the breast caused the smothering as the cat sought a warm place to sleep. The Santa Claus note is from a Chicago Evening Post poem attached to the same clipping.
