In yurney Indiana on August 5 Adams attacked Mrs C H White in her hotel room striking with a bottle then tried to kill himself with a razor. He bled and was restrained by four men as Mrs White lay weakened but recovering under doctor care.
Ella M Schiller sues Louis r, once living in Day and now in Council Bluffs, alleging marriage breakdown and suspicion of infidelity. The suit seeks divorce amid claims of forgetfulness of the marriage and associations with other men.
In Omaha a husband claims his wife was already married when they wed in 1893. Schiller testifies he learned of a prior husband the wife had before marrying him, shaping the court’s view on their marriage.
Des Moines reports substantial evidence that Atlantic census figures are padded. Affidavits alleging fraud are filed with the executive council and may go to Cass county grand jury. Temperance activists aim to remove saloons, arguing population figures affect local liquor ordinances. Population shown as 5,156, a gain of 116 in five years.
Sioux City August 4 officials respond to the telegraphers strike on the Great Northern. Fred Rogers, general freight and passenger agent for the Wilmar and Sioux Falls division, abandons his desk in Sioux City to hustle freight at stations along the line. With smaller town agents quitting, office men don overalls to provide service.
Clinton Iowa reports a peculiar setup in Rock Island where Mayor George W. McCaskrin has assumed fire and police duties without appointing chiefs. He personally leads firefighting efforts, handles arrests, and governs the city, balancing warrants and city operations from the station.
John Albert of Council Bluffs, driven by a death hallucination, was arrested while digging in a paved street. At the police station he asked the captain to accompany him to bury his body, with religious fanaticism cited as the cause.
Eldora Aug 6 Colonel Al P Mason of Union secretary of the National Association of Auctioneers has been touring Iowa and expects a busy auction season statewide. He believes the coming period will bring many sales and active demand for auctioneers.
Most sales this fall and winter will be unloading sales popular among farmers enabling them to dispose of surplus. Mr. Mason notes many farmers in town plan sales this fall as they consider moving next spring. The exodus trends northwest with another group moving from country to towns and cities.
Rockwell City Iowa on August 6 women organized a campaign for an anti spitting ordinance. A petition signed only by women is being circulated by a committee led by Mesdames John R. Lucas L Hayden Fouts and George L Brower for presentation to the city council at the regular session Monday night.
Spirit Lake Iowa moves to privatize its water works and electric lighting system by granting a twenty five year franchise to a private party. A special election will be held August nineteenth to approve the takeover.
Word from Mt. Pleasant states Rev. H. T. Besse of San Jose California has donated 750000 dollars to Wesleyan institutions nationwide. It is believed Iowa Methodist colleges will receive a substantial portion of the gift.
Louis F. Garman of Morgan township Iowa evades service of a divorce petition filed by his wife. After days of pursuit by county and town officers through a swamp Garman was finally served with the original notice. The sheriff charged $35 for mileage in the service. Mrs. Garman filed for divorce on grounds of cruel and inhuman treatment.
Two men found in Ankeny were brought to Des Moines and jailed as suspects in a bold office robbery on Locust street. Peter Morgan and Samuel Thomas, both described as Negro, allegedly held up S. T. Roberts and escaped with money. Roberts cannot positively identify them, but authorities say the pair resemble the assailants.
Sioux City Iowa August 4 Eight of the area’s most dangerous inmates escaped by sawing through a cell roof in the county jail. The bold breakout marks the third such escape in five years prompting officials to commission a new jail to restore security.
Iowa City police announce a campaign against gambling in the city as part of a broad crackdown. The effort targets illegal gambling activities and seeks to deter participation through enforcement and public awareness.
Officers rounded up eighteen men described as crap shooters in Rock Island yards. They appeared before the mayor for a hearing and were fined ten dollars plus costs.
Clyde Way son of Hon. Thomas Way and Mary Funk daughter of Senator A B Funk elope from Grinnell to Minneapolis. They married after meeting in Minneapolis, prompting a tense parental meeting in Emmetsburg. Both families express cautious approval of the young couple's political potential.
Bert Triggs a South Ottumwa liveryman was drowned when a boat capsized while he, Martin Neff and Charles Stewart ran a trot line on the Des Moines river near the Market street bridge. Neff and Stewart reached shore. Triggs body recovered in late afternoon. It is believed alcohol was involved prior to the accident.
In Britt Iowa on August 6 a group of young men bathed when John Peterson went beyond his depth and drowned. His body was recovered about thirty minutes later.
