James til, long time resident of Clinton now connected with a New London Missouri farm, killed himself in his barn by hanging from a rafter. Corbett reported the farm held a mortgage or trust. the 200 pound bachelor was known in the area and connected with property disputes before his death.
A city plans its annual Sauerkraut Day featuring free cabbage and weinerwursts. The event includes a large sausage banquet with meat from home production and shipments, aiming to feed crowds on July 30. Local farmers contribute cabbages to the feast as preparations continue.
Eta July 30. Estle Payton, a 12 year old of Highland Center, was killed at Nasby’s Corner while a baseball foul tip struck him behind the bat. He collapsed after stooping to pick up the ball and died within minutes before aid could reach him.
Proceedings before Judge Scott at Oskaloosa Iowa on July 28 featured arguments on an injunction against Sunday baseball games. After a hurried hearing the judge took the matter under advisement and indicated a decision would follow. Civic leaders contended the games disrupted the park observers and caused disturbance while other witnesses claimed they attended the park and did not find the games distracting.

Jordan city controller of the property joined talks with General Raney and Paschal but no firm action emerged. The site on the Island, once Colfax Springs hotel, cost about 100000.
Earl Cook of Michigan a farm hand on Dakota wheat fields was killed tonight when struck by a car as he prepared to board a train at the city yard. The accident occurred as he was about to begin his journey, leaving few details available.
Mason City Iowa July 28 Hon N Densmore has named delegates from the Farmers Grain Dealers Association of Iowa for the Chicago reciprocity conference August 16 17 C G Messerole Gowrie and Perry Alger Ruthven chosen. Illinois delegates named by the two associations together cover 235 cooperative grain companies and more than 25000 growers. Presidents Kincaid and Densmore will lead the Illinois and Iowa delegations respectively.
Sioux City Iowa July 30 The board of trustees of the city library and the city council dispute who controls the city hall The trustees claim the armory top floor houses the library and demand the military companies move The council supports the National Guard and refuses to oust them A joint meeting will be held this week likely settling the dispute
Charles City July 28 A laborer John Dunshee 50 died suddenly of heart failure at work. John Tynan lost the end of a thumb in a cream separator accident. The Lee family at Powersville were made dangerously ill by homemade ginger ale with pencil lead. Will Ryan fell from a barn cupola and was severely injured.
Miss Anna Teller of Cedar Rapids killed herself in a private booth at the Illinois Trust bank in Chicago over a love affair. She died within an hour despite aid. She named a man named Lee as the one she loved and left her property to her sister. Her father resides at Linn Junction.
Rumor in Mt Pleasant Iowa claims the passenger depot may be moved from Main Street to the coal chute site, with coal chutes also to be moved to New London. No definite information is available. historically the depot shifted to the current central location for public convenience.
Mt Pleasant I A July 28 Sheriff Campbell has secured a requisition from Governor Cummins for the return of L Q Briggs formerly of Salem to Iowa on a charge of passing a bad check for 15 dollars drawn on the Salem bank and given to A B Gillaspey His bank account was said to be barely able to cover the amount
A drunken brawl at the Ironhouse on the Missouri side led to McCarty a Mendota Coal and Mining Co black smith being cut and stabbed by Jos Pharris a miner. McCarty survived initial reports but is believed fatally injured.
Onawa Iowa July 30 deep water works well halted at 240 feet after gravel stops the twelve inch casing. A ten inch pipe will be set. The bore encountered sand and gravel then yellow clay and more gravel with bed rock uncertain. No quicksand found and a large water supply hoped for once bed rock is reached.
Des Moines July 29. Iowa’s rural population decline is attributed to prosperous farmers buying land for their growing families. State reports show 2,500 census enumerators found that wealthier farmers, not nonresident buyers, drive the loss. Modern machinery enables larger holdings, pushing small farmers to sell and move. Minnesota shows a similar trend.
William Gallagher a longtime money lender dies in Wisconsin and leaves nearly all his estate to Catholic priests known to him. Bequests include 400 to Francis Gallagher Graceville Minnesota 300 to St Marys Orphanage Dubuque 100 to St Josephs Home of the Aged Ashbury Dubuque County and 500 to multiple priests in Allison Belmond Eldora Charles City New Hampton Eagle Grove and other towns.
Herbert Marston of Davenport is judged insane by the Tipton insanity commissioners and to be sent to the state asylum. He imagines a fire ball guiding him and acts as a self styled second Christ, causing chaos in the town square and on nearby lawns before arrest. His condition is linked to unemployment.
Sioux City July 29. Divorce case raises questions about marital duties and spousal rights. Northrop, a Woodbury county farmer, faces allegations of cruel treatment by his wife who seeks divorce and temporary alimony was set at 350 dollars. The couple married in 1886 at Maquoketa and separated two years ago.
Two men were badly wounded in Buxton near Lob bins livery barn as shots rang out Friday night. Fred Gant was shot in the body and is expected to die while Slim Redburn suffered a severe leg wound possibly requiring amputation. A group of about fifteen colored men were present. the shooter escaped and motive remains unknown.
George Young a well known farmer living northeast of Osceola Iowa was killed by a Burlington passenger train while walking home drunk. He sat down on the track after a mile and fell as the train neared. He died within minutes leaving a wife and family.
Des Moines July 29 The state board of health passed a resolution deploring current railroad car conditions and planning cooperation with other states and the railroads to clean cars and prevent disease spread.
Mt Pleasant Iowa July 29 Mrs Nancy Clark aged eighty seven fell from trap door into cellar of her home and was killed instantly. Poor eyesight and dizziness noted as contributing factors in the accident.
Annie Wright aged 14 and Mamie Bruber 16 from Vermilion South Dakota were arrested in Sioux City Iowa as runaways and sent to the Good Shepherds home. They claim mistreatment at home and that their earnings were taken by their parents. The girls say they prefer liberty and do not want to return home.
Oskaloosa July 29 Miss Christine Gruber a native of Germany was granted naturalization papers here today She is believed to be the first woman in Iowa ever made a citizen by law.
Ottumwa July 28 Eugene H Macey formerly a noted Ottumwa businessman and son of the late H N Macoy is charged with bigamy by Mrs Mary T Hill yer Macoy who says she is wife No 2 and that wives 1 and 3 also claim him. He left Ottumwa years ago to found the National Printing and Engraving Co in Chicago and has since prospered. He returned to Ottumwa recently to dispose of property on Washington Street. Both he and Mrs Macoy are well known here and the news astonished locals.
L B Wickersham of Des Moines told 250 Woodbury county institute teachers at Morning Side College that teachers must meet high expectations beyond school hours. He preferred being a man in the twentieth century for the many chances to do good, and he was accompanied by Mrs Wickersham and their four children. The institute closures are set for Saturday.
J R Baker of Odebolt was arrested at Ida Grove by post office inspectors and a deputy marshal for sending obscene matter through the mails. He admitted the medicine lacked effect and faced federal grand jury action. held in Woodbury county jail in default of bonds.
Independence July 28. Dr J W Wells of Ossian and his wife are confined in the Mt Pleasant asylum. Wells was committed last week and the wife was sent there Wednesday. Ill health led Wells to use drugs and he continued after recovery while Mrs Wells began drug use for pleasure and could not quit.
Lige Duncanson a farm hand is under arrest in Council Bluffs for passing six worthless checks totaling 35 dollars. Frank Whitsett a liveryman Otto Goldstein a saloonkeeper and H H Martens a hotel proprietor lent him money on the checks. Duncanson tried to sell his employer s horse and has been held to the grand jury.
Aeronaut Claude Woods was badly injured in Muscatine Iowa when his parachute struck a box car as he descended. A breeze carried him obliquely and he hung to the parachute until reaching the ground. Doctors say the injuries are not believed to be fatal.
Lloyd C. Grout aged 15 son of R A Grout traveling auditor for Rock Island railway was struck on the head by a baseball during a local game in Cedar Rapids Iowa and died six hours later.
Ames July 28 The board of trustees of the state college of agriculture and mechanical arts endorses Domestic Science as a practical useful subject. It is integrated into the general college course for women, with entrance requirements exams and records. The two year course was discontinued but the program is expanding with new apparatus and upgraded facilities for the coming year.
Mrs. Elizabeth Shelton files suit in district court for divorce from Dr. Cass Shelton after six months of marriage alleging cruel and inhuman treatment and threats with a revolver. She seeks $5,000 alimony and an attachment to restrain disposal of property before the hearing. Judge Roberts ordered the $5,000 attachment.
Central City seeks a Carnegie library and has received a letter from Mr. Carnegie offering $1,000 for every $100 pledged by the town. The town must provide a site and show funds to maintain the institution, aiming for a $2,000 building with about $200 yearly revenue for upkeep.
Fremont Iowa July 29 James White of Fremont fell from a wagon and broke his neck during a scene of excitement. Walter Mowery, driving cattle, was thrown from his horse and dislocated his shoulder. White fainted and severed his spinal cord above the shoulder while Mowery lay nearby unable to move for about an hour before discovery.
F K Detwiller a Manchester Iowa horse dealer has shipped a number of fancy horses to St Paul for army inspection. He holds a contract to furnish cavalry horses and some of the animals shipped yesterday will likely be sent to Fort Des Moines for service.
Waterloo July 29 Governor Folk, tied up in St. Louis fighting graft, cancels his chautauqua appearance after sending a telegram stating lawlessness in St. Louis County has reached a crisis and it would be dangerous to public interests for him to depart, disappointing 1500 attendees.
Winfield Iowa July 29 P B Johnston of a farm three miles southeast of town died after two years of declining health. He attempted to rise this morning but was stricken with heart trouble and died at 2 45 p m. Local residents noted his long illness and quiet passing at home.
