Charles Messer born December 31 1843 in Bavar ia Germany died at his Walnut township home Sunday March 81 aged 68 years 3 months He immigrated in 1855 settled in Jefferson county married Elizabeth Ferd in 1870 and had five children four of whom survive with his wife Surviving are daughters Clara E Schafer Randall Green and sons Robert and Ralph Funeral held in Walnut township conducted by Rev W A Wolgemuth with burial in Brighton cemetery on April 3.

A road drag is praised as the sole effective method for developing and maintaining dirt roads. It builds a durable crown, packs soil tightly, and repels water, outperforming graders which roughen and loosen the surface and waste township funds. Ola Yost a boy of hopeful plans ends life in tragedy
The Trib une reports Ola Yost a youth from Jefferson County appears to have been unsettled mentally before he shot himself last Sunday night. Friends describe his cordial relations with his father and active involvement in farm projects, the Corn club presidency, and plans for Ames Agricultural College before his death.
