Albert Howell a well known Jefferson county resident died Sunday at the home of his son Parvin Howell two and a half miles southeast of Glasgow. He aged 84 served in the Civil War and had lived on the same farm since his marriage in 1880 to Drusilla Gregory. Funeral services were held at the Glasgow Methodist church with interment in a nearby cemetery despite bad weather. He left three surviving sons Parvin Thomas and Roscoe and a deceased son Robert with wife and mother.
The Daughters of Veterans vote to observe Appomattox Day on April 9. A five member volunteer committee outlined extensive plans at a Woodmen hall meeting and will publish further details as they are formed.
A fire at the Mrs. Mace Clinkenbeard farm four miles southwest of Fairfield destroyed a large barn and several head of stock belonging to tenant J. C. Hagans. Losses include a stallion, five horses, a colt, a sow and seven pigs. Barn value about $2000. Hagans' loss not stated. Fire spread brands over distance until wind shifted. Fairfield department sent chemical apparatus to aid. both losses partly insured.
James Edgar Hopson aged seventy six of 409 North B street dropped dead at his home Thursday evening from heart failure. He had been in poor health for years and recently. He formerly worked for the Dexter Washing Machine company. He is survived by his widow. Funeral services were held at Kilbourne in Van Buren county where burial occurred.
C Blystad a Fairport biologist with the U S bureau of fisheries spent days in Iowa Falls examining the Iowa River. He collected water and ice samples above and below Belmond and noted a unique condition with fish deaths. He will report findings to the Washington biological department. He is based at Fairport near Muscatine home to the west’s only mussel hatchery.
Fresh ewe milk is used to produce Royuzefort cheese in the town of Royuzefort France. The milk is delivered daily filtered and allowed to turn then pressed into molds sown with spores to aid ripening. After draining the cheese rests in natural cellars on rocky hillsides for 30 to 90 days.

While bills are shelved or killed daily new measures include co operative banks oil inspection park development fishing licenses and health education. The senate considers bond sale oversight and tax tweaks while the Gilchrist bill on gender parity for party committees nears passage.
A young couple from Moline visiting Fairfield then fled with clothing and articles from the Clinkenbeard residence on South Sixth street. Smith and his wife, using aliases, were arrested by Deputy Robertson and held on a twenty day sentence. They were found in Batavia waiting room with tickets to Ottumwa before being returned to Fairfield.
Judge Walker issued an injunction last week against eight men and one woman charged in indictments for illegal liquor sales. Indictments were dismissed as defendants did not oppose the injunctions restraining further unlawful liquor sales. Named defendants include Raymond Boos Herbert Woolsey J R Hagans William Smith Ransom Elder Charles Elder James Smith and Della Smith. Indictments were based on testimony by Bucher and Johnson county special agents.
Reports from the hospital say A S McPherson, in treatment for several days, remains in very critical condition. Doubt was expressed Wednesday morning that he would survive the day.
Mayor Zeigler announces the new city administration begins with Dr Charles Rick sher as health officer after Dr A S Hague's death left the post vacant. The same marshal police force is kept, X C Nady reelected city attorney, John F Loehr reappointed city weighmaster, L T Chapins as superintendent of public works with 2000 dollar salary, Geo C Woods as city clerk. New council assigns committees and will sit as board of equalization this week and likely into next week.
The Veo postoffice was discontinued April 1 by government order due to minimal patronage over recent years. The small office had dwindled to almost nothing in activity.

Ed G. Fligg, after twenty four years as clerk and part owner in the C. A. Herring company, buys Mr. Herring's interests and becomes sole owner. The store is one of Fairfield's oldest business houses with Mr. Herring in the business for forty four years. Fligg started as a delivery boy at fifteen dollars a month. It may not be a hard winter, but at times we feel pretty shaky.
Senator Smith W. Brookhart of Washington Iowa spoke at the Fairfield Forum discussing deflation causes and ship subsidy defeat. He cited Wall Street moves in 1920 and the 1921 22 deflation totaling fifty billion dollars, with farmers bearing thirty two billion in losses and railroads overhauling costs to justify rate hikes.
The school board opened bids showing over eighty one thousand dollars between high and low bids for a new brick three story grade school on West Burlington Street and an addition to the high school. Hunzinger & Co. won general work at 86 839 dollars with high school add on nearly 17 000 more. Pierson & Pierson secured plumbing at 25 381 dollars and Central Electric at 1 824 85.
Mrs George King of Holyoke Colorado died Friday morning at her home. Her funeral was Wednesday at the Methodist church in Glasgow with interment in the nearby cemetery. The body arrived with her husband. Mrs King, born Tillie Cochran, was daughter of Mr and Mrs John Cochran Sr longtime Glasgow residents.
LeRoy Williams buys Carter Bros market on north side of the square and operates the business in the former building. Carter Bros previously purchased a market in Mt Pleasant which they will operate.
A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. R. B. Pickens at Jefferson hospital last Monday, adding a new member to the family.
