Fairfield residents are urged by the Ladies Improvement Association to cut grass and weeds, keep streets clean, and coordinate block chairmen by August 1 to pursue a citywide effort toward Fairfield becoming the state’s cleanest and most beautiful city.
Mt Pleasant Journal and Burlington Hawk Eye quarrel over Iowa Amateur standings. Laird favors dropping Eldon games. Wapello and Mt Pleasant clubs shuffle lineup. Fairfield expected to win. White Sox boost and funds exceed $200 for team support.
Des Moines reports a controversy over who will hang John Junkin the Ottumwa murderer. Sheriff Jackson of Wapello county claims jurisdiction, while Sheriff Clark of Appanoose disputes and fears the job. A proposed triple button trap method and synchronized firing is floated, plus notes on the pending July 31 1910 execution and the lengthy Bill of Exceptions from Judge J C Mitchell.
Mrs Marshall Chilcott delighted the Methodist church choir with a social evening at her South Depot street home. The group practiced for Sunday services then shared ice cream and cake before departing, thanking her for a very pleasant gathering.
The Carnaby Stock Company ended a week long engagement in Fairfield with a packed tent for the closing performance Saturday night. The laugh provoking comedy Married Life drew a large crowd aided by a splendid orchestra. The troupe moved on to Washington yesterday.
Indications point to a Sons of Veterans branch being organized in Fairfield soon. A preliminary meeting in the G A R post room elected William E. Donaldson as temporary chairman and Joe Crail as secretary. A organizing committee of Ray Maxwell Charles S. Crail and J P Starr will arrange for a larger meeting on August 9 at the Grand Army Hall.
Miss Ina Farmer spent Sunday with friends in Perlee. Miss Anna Peterson has returned to her work in Ottumwa after visiting her parents near Perlee. Miss Ruby Callender of Guelph Ontario is visiting Mr. and Mrs. Robert Louden on West Washington Street for several weeks.
Gertrude Rasmus James died Saturday afternoon at her parents home near Fairfield after a months long battle with tuberculosis. She leaves four children Carl nine Fred eight Fay six and Dora eighteen months along with her husband Emery who was killed earlier at Washington, Iowa. Surviving relatives include her parents Frank and Harry Rasmus and sister Dora Franklin with funeral services held at the Rasmus home conducted by Rev. G W Burch.
Visitors from Ottumwa and Fairfield stop by friends here. Thrashing starts with three carloads of wheat. Mrs Laughlin and Miss Anderson return from Trederick. Ladies Aid meets at Nina Youmans home with good turnout. Prof Carter has a new house and cedar cementing. Roy Price moves to a new home. Uncle Tom's Cabin shows to a full house.
Miss Bernice Childress who had been visiting Miss Bernice Snyder returned yesterday to her home in Oskaloosa.
The biennial gathering of Louden Machinery Company salesmen fills the week in this city with instruction meetings and factory tours. Eastward expansion plans include a new Albany branch, with Otto Stichter named manager. many representatives from St Paul to Ontario are in attendance.
E B Shaw departed for Independance Kansas this morning. William EF Hartman returned from Salem where he stayed with Miss Sylvia McDowell. Mrs. John McGlade and her Corydon son visit Mrs. J. E. Cummings on South Court Street for a few days.
Mrs. Mark Doughty has been quite ill but is reported to be slowly improving, according to latest medical updates.
The Leggett House, regarded as a top equipped hostelry in Iowa, undergoes interior redecorating. Parlor dining room and bedrooms gain panel ceilings and Linewall walls, plus a brighter wash room. George Blake, new proprietor, installs a card system and combined mail and key rack to streamline guest service.
Miss Tressa Way married Edwin M. Krum in a small ceremony at the home of Mr. and Mrs E G Coleton on North Court street. Rev G W Bureh officiated in the presence of close witnesses. The bride, daughter of Mr. and Mrs D R Way, is praised for her training. Mr. Krum, a painter, is described as industrious. They will reside with the Coletons for now.
Mrs Lou Westwelt of Chicago visits her mother and sister Mrs Alex Easton with Miss Gladys Norris returning from Corning. Dr W S Johnston of Corning visits J C Norris. Mrs Renshaw of Des Moines arrives to see her parents. Elizabeth Whitney and Miss Mary Brown depart for Seattle Exposition. John McClain and Harry Shillerstrom plan western travels. A youth group visits Bernhart and Ruth Whitmore’s home. attendees include Bertha Lamson Cecil Campbell Pearl Prather Bernice Childress Nell Neibert Florence Loehr Harvey Gaumer Vern Henry Wm Kelly Robert Anstead Ray Fisher and L Ball.
